Phase 1 Habitat Survey is the standard approach to assessing landscape composition and use, and is a widely-used tool in conservation assessment and planning. This course aims to provide the basic skills to undertake Phase 1 surveys and then to develop this knowledge with experience across a variety of habitats, allowing the wider applications and potential difficulties of the process to be explored.
Within and around Orielton are a wide range of common and special habitats (meadows, pastures, woodland, marsh, dune and maritime vegetation). Surveying these areas will provide a wide range of experience of habitats and features that will develop individual confidence in the technique. Additionally time will be spent discussing problems in interpretation (grassland types, woodlands) and common misunderstandings.
The course is particularly suitable for those working in conservation and consultancy. No prior knowledge is assumed although those with some experience wishing to extend their experience are very welcome.
