A course providing an introduction to the Phase I Habitat Survey method. This is a rapid qualitative system developed by NCC (Nature Conservancy Council) in the early 1980’s, which quickly became the standard methodology for obtaining basic habitat quality information across the wider countryside and within urban wildspace.
A general knowledge of plant species is required to complete Phase I surveys, thus guidance will be given on developing this area of expertise. A Plant Identification course is also available 29 March 2014 to complement this course. The relationship of habitat type to topography, substrate and hydrology will be highlighted. Aerial photos will also be used to aid the studies.
Fieldwork will be undertaken with the results taken forward to produce habitat map and target notes. Conclusions will be drawn (and recommendations for a choice of imaginary work related scenarios) in the form of a brief citation - report.
A copy of the Phase 1 Habitat Survey manual will be given to each participant as part of your course materials.
This course runs from 09:00 to 16:30; please bring a packed lunch. As transport may be required for site visits car pooling will be arranged on the day.
