Description

Location: Marine Geoscience, Science and Technology Directorate, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

Description: Applications are invited for a marine scientist specializing in issues on marine policy and ocean management. Applicants will have a good knowledge of marine ecosystems, environmental management legislation and policy issues. 

The successful applicant will work in a multidisciplinary team investigating the likely effects of climate change in the Arctic on the marine environment and on major economic sectors, such as transport, tourism, fisheries and oil and gas production. The post will review policy documents regulating the activities of the various business sectors, and national, bilateral and international agreements of relevance to the Arctic Ocean. Close cooperation with partner institutions in the European project ACCESS (Arctic Climate Change, Economy and Society Study), business stakeholders and key players in Arctic coastal states and indigenous peoples will be required.

You will have a first degree in a marine science and a PhD in marine policy. You will have excellent writing skills and proven ability in producing concise summaries of a wide variety of documents. You will have good presentation and communication skills. You will work well in a team of scientists as well as having the abilities to direct your own work plan and deliver on time.

This position is offered on NERC terms and conditions as a part-time fixed term contract for 9 months and you will be required to work 22.2 hours per week (3 days). The salary is in the range of £15,708 to £17,646 per annum (pro rata to £26,180 to £29,410 per annum).
