Title: Ocean Environmental Management Researcher

Location: Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Research Group (OBE), National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Southampton

Description: Our Centre, at Southampton, represents a collaborative partnership with the University of Southampton’s School of Ocean and Earth Science (OES); this partnership is underpinned by the Graduate School of NOCS, which, with over 200 PhD students, represents one of the largest postgraduate marine science communities in the World - http://noc.ac.uk/gsnocs.

The NERC Directorate of Science and Technology at the NOC contains five research groups. Our science has high socio-economic impact and tackles many of the major environmental issues of immediate concern to both Government and public. 

We are now looking to recruit a high-quality candidate to an open-ended post to strengthen and expand our research in the Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems group. http://noc.ac.uk/science-technology/research-groups/obe 

This post is for a Marine Ecologist with potential for applying research to the environmental management of the oceans and seabed and is available at NERC Bands 4 to 6 (indicative salaries provided below) and will address growing issues in the use of ocean resources and understanding of habitat function and marine biodiversity. You should have detailed knowledge of deep-sea ecosystems set within a broad appreciation of the environmental controls on deep-sea faunal distributions. Knowledge in ocean management-related research themes is desirable, including: marine protected area efficacy, ecosystem functioning, life history processes, ecosystem modeling, and molecular ecology. Experience in leading offshore expeditions and evidence of funding by industry and international organisations are also desirable.

The post will be offered on NERC terms and conditions, with indicative salaries at Band 6 (Staff Scientist) being £26,180 to £29,410 per annum; Band 5 (Senior Staff Scientist) being £30,710 to £37,120 per annum and Band 4 (Principal Staff Scientist) being £36,240 to £48,230 per annum (depending upon experience).
