SALARY: $86,000 (incl 9% superannuation)
STATUS: Permanent, Full Time

BACKGROUND

The Australian Conservation Foundation (ACF) is committed to inspiring people to achieve a healthy environment for all Australians.  For more than 40 years we have been a strong voice for the environment, promoting solutions through partnerships, consultation, education and research.  We work with the community, business, and governments to protect, restore and sustain our environment.

ACF’s Northern Australia Program team aims to achieve a better future for people and nature.  It is based on effective landscape-scale environment protection and ecologically sustainable development reflecting the unique natural and cultural values in Australia’s North, promoted through cooperation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.

The key principles of the program are a two way approach, based on strong partnerships, listening to and understanding Indigenous people, improving the social and economic well-being of Indigenous communities, and using world class conservation models.

POSITION PURPOSE

Lead ACF’s conservation program in Northern Australia, with a current focus on Cape York, Kimberley and Kakadu, and provide support and mentoring to Indigenous and non-Indigenous staff and partner organisations.

The position leads a multi-disciplinary team of skilled and committed staff and is responsible for the effective management and delivery of program outcomes. Cross-organisational liaison and collaboration is essential to the success of the position.

  • Lead, manage and coach all program staff and build a strong and high performing team with the support, cultural skills and awareness relevant to working with Indigenous peoples and meeting the program’s Indigenous and cultural goals.
  • Develop and manage appropriate contacts with governments and the corporate sector and, in collaboration with key ACF staff, lobby and negotiate with politicians, government officers and business people to achieve program goals.
  • Provide advice to ACF regarding effective policies, programs and projects relevant to the Northern Australia Program using research and analysis of relevant conservation and cultural issues.
  • Liaise with ACF’s Communications and other key staff to ensure effective coordination of ACF public messages and positioning, and promote ACF to the media, target audiences and the public on topics relevant to the program.
  • Liaise with ACF marketing staff to ensure effective coordination of fundraising initiatives to significantly grow ACF’s Northern Australia Program and fulfill the requirements of grants and major donor liaison.
  • Ensure that ACF develops and maintains effective and innovative collaborations and partnerships with other environment and Indigenous organisations working on similar or related issues.
  • Other duties as required by Campaigns Director.

Experience, skills, personal attributes and qualifications required:
