Description

Location: Marine Systems Modelling, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton

Description: We are seeking to appoint a NCEO Ocean Carbon Modeller to undertake
strategic research in the area of data assimilation in marine ecosystem
modelling with a particular focus on helping to develop the full potential
of earth observation data for monitoring, diagnosing and predicting environmental
change in accordance with the aims of the National Centre for Earth Observation.

You will develop and carry out an area of personal research, building on
and extending previous collaborative work with the UK Met Office in biogeochemical
modelling and ocean colour data assimilation and its application to climate
system analysis and forecasting. You will also investigate the performance
of ecosystem models and data assimilation schemes and approaches to test
and develop them.

The successful candidate will have a PhD or equivalent professional qualification
and research experience in a relevant subject area along with a strong background
in mathematics and statistics. Practical experience of numerical models
is essential as well as good programming skills, preferably including knowledge
of FORTRAN and/or C in a UNIX/LINUX environment and the ability to handle
large data sets. You will be able to communicate new and complex information
effectively, both verbally and in writing, engaging the interest and enthusiasm
of the target audience and be able to present research results at group
meetings and conferences.

The post is offered on NERC terms and conditions and is available until
31 March 2013. The salary is in the range of £26,180 to £29,410 per annum.
