Native Plant Nursery Internship
Wildlife Habitat Management DepartmentHabitat Restoration/Exotic Removal Internship
Term: January 2013 – June 15, 2014 Compensation: $200/week stipend, housing when on Sanibel, $400 travel stipend
Required qualifications: High school diploma and related experience working outdoors Some experience running landscaping equipment (mowers, chainsaws, trimmers etc.) Ability and desire to work long, irregular hours (including weekend hours if needed) Ability to work under adverse conditions (intense sun and heat, biting insects, rain Ability to work independently to accomplish set goals and as part of a team Ability to maintain a positive attitude & sense of humor Enthusiasm for habitat restoration and exotic removal Willingness to learn and use new techniques to restore habitat
Desired qualifications: Plans of furthering their career in biology or other related fields Knowledge of Florida native and exotic plant species Experience spraying herbicide on exotic plants Experience driving pick-up trucks, ATV’s and other all terrain vehicles Experience assisting with prescribed burns Willingness to use your personal vehicle for work (mileage compensated) if needed Experience with public outreach (talking to the public if asked a question)
Job description:
We are seeking one intern to assist our field technicians with restoration and maintenance of SCCF conservation lands, as well as upkeep of the grounds surrounding our buildings and hiking trails. Preference will be given to individuals with experience in the south Florida climate and similar prior tasks. Intern will be responsible for accomplishing tasks independently and in a timely matter. He/she will courteously answer questions asked by the public about habitat restoration. Work will be 5-6 days per week starting early in the morning and potentially continuing into the evening. Weekend work may be required. Applicants must also be willing to assist with other departmental projects, such as wildlife sampling, as needed. Required qualifications: Bachelor’s degree in biology, wildlife biology or related field Field experience with: herps, birds, small mammals Ability and desire to work long, irregular hours (including weekend hours) Ability to work under adverse conditions (intense sun and heat, biting insects, rain) Ability and willingness to work in water on a daily basis Ability to work independently and as part of a team Ability to maintain a positive attitude & sense of humor Ability to collect accurate scientific data INDEPENDENTLY ABILITY TO MEET DEADLINES Enthusiasm for field research and learning new field techniques
Desired qualifications: Field experience with: sea turtles, drift-fence sampling, herp marking techniques, frog call surveys, shorebird experience Experience with Microsoft Office Suite Experience with GIS Willingness to use your personal vehicle for work (mileage compensated) Experience with public outreach Job description: We are seeking one intern to assist and manage ongoing wildlife projects in the Wildlife Habitat Management Program. Preference will be given to individuals with prior sea turtle experience, as well as conducting herp-related field work. Intern will be responsible for care of nature center live animal exhibits (snakes and turtles), as well as occasional educational talks for the public. Work will be 5-6 days per week starting early in the morning and potentially continuing into the evening. Weekend work may be required. Applicants must also be willing to assist with other departmental projects including, invasive species removal, habitat restoration, shorebird monitoring, and freshwater fish/invertebrate sampling.
