21/07/14 - 25/07/14
This three-day course will provide information on British semi-natural woodland types (National Vegetation Classification), distribution and nature conservation interests (flora and fauna). Days will be spent in the field visiting a variety of locally distinctive woodlands (upland western oak woods, W17, species rich lowland ash, W8, and the South Hams creek woodlands), of high nature conservation interest. There will be field and laboratory training in the assessment of appropriate woodland condition, on the identification of ancient woodland indicator species, as well as native trees, shrubs, ferns and bryophytes. Examples will be provided of good nature conservation management and discussion on the major challenges faced by woodland managers. Delegates will have an opportunity to plan their own woodland and discuss the latest best practice techniques for new native woodland establishment.
