National Executive Director and Southeast Program Intern

 

Would you like to make connections and experience opportunities few internships can offer? Are you interested in energy and climate advocacy, outreach, and program management?

Hours & Compensation:
35-40 hours/week, $800 monthly stipend.  Help obtaining college credit (if needed).

Position Dates:
Late November – early December 2014; interns are expected to commit for a duration of 4 to 6 months. Specific dates are flexible; negotiable start and end dates.

Reports To:
Both the National Executive Director and the Southeast Regional Coordinator. Position will require working and reporting remotely to the Southeast Regional Coordinator via phone, email, and Skype. If needed, travel for in-person meetings or events.

Location:
The internship is in our Washington, DC office.

Summary:

The US Climate Action Network (USCAN) is the largest US network of organizations focused on energy and climate issues. USCAN’s mission is to support and strengthen US-based civil society organizations’ influence on the development and implementation of local, national, and international climate policy and action. The Southeast Climate & Energy Network (SCEN), a program of USCAN, is a regional network of nearly 200 organizations working across 12 states in the Southeast. SCEN's mission is strategic coordination among organizations in the Southeast to secure fair, just and science-based climate and energy policies. As an intern for USCAN, you will work for both the national and Southeast regional programs. Through both, you will have the opportunity to get a bird's eye view on what's happening in climate and energy politics on a national and regional level.

Here, you'll obtain real-world experience while supporting our work. Your duties will include research, programmatic support, event planning, and outreach. You’ll have the opportunity to work with the diverse collection of organizations that make up the clean energy and climate movement. Best of all, an internship with USCAN introduces you to and puts you in touch with our entire network.

Responsibilities:

The intern's position will be dynamic and include work in outreach, programs, fundraising, and event planning, such as:

  • Monitor major state newspapers for climate and clean energy news,
  • Routinely review the websites of member organizations and other stakeholders for campaigns or announcements,
  • Create and deliver summary reports to supervisor,
  • Establish working relationships with USCAN and SCEN organizational members,
  • Assist with listserve management, and
  • Other duties as required.

For the National Executive Director:

  • Assist with board and donor communication, including scheduling meetings and taking notes,
  • Plan high level events for policy makers and other stakeholders,
  • Attend and assist with organizing community meetings and briefings for USCAN members,
  • Attend briefings, congressional hearings, and other events as needed,
  • Help coordinate USCAN member engagement and surveys,
  • Help manage USCAN member database and list serves, and
  • Research, identify, and assist with outreach to potential new member organizations.

For Southeast regional coordination:

  • Prepare weekly Huddle Round-Up newsletter for members,
  • Track progress of Southeast state legislative sessions, state and municipal public service commissions, and the Environmental Protection Agency,
  • Assist in the development of a Southeast climate and clean energy strategic plan and power map,
  • Continuously update SCEN member roster information,
  • Research grant opportunities for SCEN and its members,
  • Assist with fundraising research,
  • Logistics and event planning for SCEN summits, and
  • Represent SCEN in calls, conferences, and events when possible.

 

Desired Skills:

  • Knowledge of climate and energy issues,
  • An understanding of community organizing, civil society, and government,
  • Event planning skills,
  • Writing and research experience is highly desired,
  • Excellent communication skills, including the ability to effectively and responsibly communicate via phone, email, and Skype,
  • A passion for working with diverse constituencies,
  • Ability to work remotely is highly valued,
  • Takes initiative and completes tasks independently,
  • Strong organizational skills,
  • Positive attitude,
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and other software applications, and
  • Ability to travel in the Southeast.
