The National Campaign Director provides campaign leadership and coordination of the Wilderness Society campaigns to maximise the organisation’s effectiveness in achieving its purpose. This position works in collaboration with the National Campaign Committee (NCC) on campaigns, and with three other managers to form the management team of the Wilderness Society Inc, reporting to the Committee of Management.

The four-person management team of the Wilderness Society Inc are:

Key Functions

1.    Work as a member of TWS Inc’s management team. 
2.    Maintain a strategic overview of TWS and provide effective campaign leadership across the organisation.
3.    Oversee the development and implementation of the TWSA Campaign Plan, and ongoing 18-month campaign work plan.
4.    Be the national spokesperson (known as National Director) and provide a national campaign voice for mobilising and coordinating membership and public support and commitment.
5.    Provide day-to-day management of the national campaign team.
6.    Ensure the provision of effective national campaign support to TWS Australia member organisations.
7.    Seek guidance from the National Campaign Committee and maintain a productive working relationship with the NCC.

Key Responsibilities

Maintenance of strategic overview and effective campaign leadership

  • Work as a member of TWS Inc’s management team, which is responsible for providing national leadership, organisational coordination, and delivery of the plans and policies adopted by the TWS Inc Committee of Management.
  • Provide national campaign coordination, including nationally coordinated political engagement and lobbying on campaigns.
  • Undertake strategic scanning, assist the organisation to develop its vision and goals and promote the development of a whole of organisation strategic plan.
  • Drive the review and development of WildCountry campaign objectives across TWS.
  • Be a role model and mentor to senior campaign personnel consistent with TWS purpose and values.
  • Work closely with campaign leaders at the state and national level to ensure effective use of campaign resources.
  • Build and maintain relationships with eNGOs and alliances (including major donors) to support TWS campaigns.

Campaign plan and workplan

  • Lead the development of the TWS Australia national campaign plan in conjunction with the National Campaign Committee.
  • Oversee the TWS Australia national campaign plan endorsement, implementation and evaluation.
  • Ensure the development of a rolling 18-month campaign workplan which coordinates the work of all campaigns at national and regional levels.
  • Support the development of thematic campaign planning in conjunction with communications and fundraising.
  • Provide regular reports to the TWS Inc Committee of Management, National Campaign Committee and the rest of TWS on campaign activities as required.
  • Be responsible for the development and management of the national campaign budget.

National spokesperson role

  • Be the spokesperson for the Wilderness Society on the range of campaign issues and organisational matters where relevant.
  • Provide regular commentary to media.
  • Support the development of effective media and communications strategies.

Manage the National Campaign Team

  • Work with the National Campaign Team to ensure high level integration and coordination of campaigns.
  • Ensure the effective recruitment and training of the National Campaign Team. 
  • Convene National Campaign Team meetings, and ensure delivery of the NCT mission statement.
  • Ensure delivery of the National Campaign Team’s part of campaign plans and outcomes.
  • Be responsible for delivery of Policy & Planning Meeting, National Management Committee and National Campaign Committee decisions which are the responsibility of the National Campaign Team.
  • Participate in National Campaign Committee meetings as a representative of the National Campaign Team and ensure information flow back to the National Campaign Team.

Effective national campaign support and collaboration with National Campaign Committee

  • Promote TWS organisational values on all facets of organisational activities.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of the TWS Australia strategic plan, TWS Inc budget and management of TWS Inc in consultation with the rest of the management team.
  • Undertake regular reviews or evaluations of campaigns and campaign processes, coordinated with the National Campaign Team and drive campaign innovation across TWS entities.
  • Contribute to organisational health across all TWS entities.
  • Work with TWS Campaign Centres to ensure consistency and effectiveness of campaign plans.
  • Seek guidance from the National Campaign Committee on relevant campaign matters and maintain a productive working relationship with the National Campaign Committee.

Accountabilities

The position:

  • Is directly responsible to the TWS Inc Committee of Management.
  • Is a member of the TWS Inc Management Team which oversees the day to day running of the organisation.
  • Communicates and consults with other senior managers and staff as required.
  • Reports regularly to the TWS Inc Committee of Management and National Campaign Committee on campaign activities.
  • Must maintain a productive working relationship with the National Campaign Committee and is subject to regular review from the TWS Inc Committee of Management and National Campaign Committee.

  • Exceptional advocacy, campaigning and social change strategy skills and experience.
  • Excellent media and communication skills.
  • Demonstrated high-level leadership, collaborative organisational management and organisational development skills, especially in a national setting.
  • Demonstrated ability to undertake high level negotiation, manage change and lead innovation in a complex strategic environment.
  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of the Australian environment movement, environmental issues and political processes.
  • High levels of personal integrity, energy and resilience, and a determination to deliver effective outcomes.
  • Demonstrated commitment to organisational democracy and consensus decision-making.
