Purpose of job

 The role of ‘Molecular Diagnostician’ involves working in the MTU team to deliver high throughput PCR-based testing of wide variety of organisms in support statutory surveys, commercial services and R&D projects. The key purpose of this job will be to assist in the optimisation and validation of molecular assay and to generate data in support of the accreditation of the assays to UK and European quality standards.

 The post holder will:

  • Generate data to validate molecular diagnostic methods used or developed in MTU and to assist in the validation work for other teams within the plant protection program.
  • Collaborate with the MTU Technical Manager and R&D teams to support the transfer and validation of novel diagnostic methods for use in high throughput workflows.
  • Writing and revising standard operating procedures (SOPs) for the methods and workflows.
  • Assist in the training of the assistant diagnosticians and ensuring that new validated methodologies become established across the team and wider user base within Fera.
  • Ensure best practice in the lab and adherence to quality systems (ISO9001 and ISO17025).
  • Help to maintain the provision of the MTU as a shared facility service.
  • Help to meet target savings through the Continuous Improvement process.
