Purpose of job
- To take a lead role in the provision of plant disease diagnostics, using molecular diagnostic tools.
- To facilitate technology transfer from R&D teams to frontline diagnostics to ensure new assays are appropriately validated and fit for purpose.
- To support research on the biology (epidemiology and etiology) of fungal plant pathogens.
The post holder will:
- Take a lead role in provision of molecular diagnostic testing for the detection and identification of fungal plant pathogens.
- Deliver the molecular diagnosis of diseases of field crops, protected edibles, ornamentals and deliver seed screening, from sample assessment through to customer reporting.
- Support validation of novel molecular diagnostic methods based on real-time PCR and deliver them as new commercial and statutory services (validation to ISO17025 where appropriate).
- Transfer technology from research projects to routine front-line diagnostics.
- Provide diagnostic support to applied research on the epidemiology, etiology and management of fungal plant pathogens.
- Support the drafting of scientific papers and research reports.
- Assist in the general day-to-day running of the bacteriology laboratory including maintenance of UKAS ISO17025 accredited procedures
