Job Title: Membership and Acquisition Manager
Employer: The Wilderness Society Inc, 57E Brisbane St, Hobart, Tasmania
Location: Melbourne 
Salary Range: $72,000-$88,000 per annum plus superannuation
Hours: Full time
Tenure: Fixed Term / 2 years
Responsible to: National Membership and Fundraising Manager

The Position

This position is responsible for overseeing the strategic development and day to day operations of the membership program including management oversight of the national Face 2 Face program, telemarketing, digital marketing and new member acquisition channels.

Positions reporting to the Membership and Acquisition Manager are:

  • National Wilderness Defenders Manager (Face 2 Face Program)
  • Membership Marketing Officer
  • Wilderness Defenders Operations Manager

The position demands high-level management, leadership and communication skills and involves working with key internal and external stakeholders as well as state campaign centres.

The role requires strong interpersonal skills together with substantial experience in managing revenue and fundraising acquisition programs along with the ability to identify issues and proactively develop solutions, and the capacity to be highly organised and manage multiple projects.

Key Functions

  • Maintain and where possible grow TWS’s membership base to generate campaign support and core revenue.
  • Oversee the development and management of existing and new membership acquisition channels including Face 2 Face, telemarketing, above and below the line promotional activity and digital acquisition
  • Ensure that TWS Inc operates within all fundraising, statutory and regulatory compliance guidelines.
  • Ensure the effective day to day running of the membership operations.
  • Work closely with other fundraising programs to generate and maintain membership support.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of effective performance management processes for all staff in the membership program.
  • Oversee the development of all strategic and operational plans for TWS Inc membership program.

Key Responsibilities

Oversee the effective and efficient management of the inhouse Face 2 Face Program including:

  • Develop acquisition budgets and program KPI’s and work with the National Wilderness Defenders Manager to develop sales plans to ensure the membership acquisition team achieve the budgeted member and revenue targets across face to face fundraising.
  • Develop new personal selling channels to increase membership and diversify the program against the risk of relying on one channel, while fortifying the program through a rigorous training, development and succession program.
  • Oversee acquisition operations and logistics to develop pilot campaigns, policy developments and implementation plans that improve or grow the program and leverage on the programs strengths ensuring operations are executed efficiently and effectively in the field.

Oversee the management of the membership marketing program which includes:

  • Working with key campaigners to develop integrated campaign and fundraising strategy that achieves campaign and revenue objectives.
  • The coordination and project management of member and supporter communications production, including welcome packs, new member packs, emails, annual tax receipts, donor care packs, monthly renewals, credit card and direct debit payment detail updates, reactivations.
  • Developing communications strategies using research, market intelligence and segmentation and imbed this strategy into key messaging across communication channels with supporters.
  • Developing and implementing relationship and retention strategies and plans within a tight budget.
  • Coordinating tele-fundraising programs with an external supplier to engage, upgrade and reactivate membership.
  • Planning, coordination and timely production of member and supporter communications across print, digital and personal mediums.
  • Market research, data base analysis and segmentation to inform sales force and retention strategies.
    Monitoring, tracking, testing, analyzing, reviewing and reporting on program performance, including recommendations for future improvements and overall program direction.
  • Working closely with the Membership and Fundraising Operations team in Hobart to ensure member services meets expectations and drives retention and revenue protection. Monitoring members services against agreed MOU’s an problem solving in instances of underperformance.

Budget development, monitoring and management:

  • Strategic planning in conjunction with the Direct Marketing Manager and the National Membership and Fundraising Manager.
  • Performance management of all membership staff including, developing program plans, performance plans, training and development plans and setting and monitoring KPI’s. Conducting regular staff performance monitoring and evaluation.
  • Management of relevant budgets within membership areas including setting budgets and providing regular analysis, monitoring and reporting of programs financial results to National Membership and Fundraising Manager and committees as requested.

Other Management Responsibilities:

  • Attend national committee meetings as required.
  • Ensure the Membership program complies with all TWS Australia policies and procedures.

Selection Criteria

  • Demonstrated passion and commitment to protecting wilderness and to TWS purpose and values.
  • Tertiary qualifications in marketing or equivalent field.
  • At least 5 years senior fundraising or membership management experience including, Face 2 Face.
  • High level knowledge of marketing principles, techniques and fundraising best practice.
  • High level understanding and experience in strategic planning.
  • Demonstrated experience in account/supplier management including face to face and telemarketing.
  • Outstanding financial, analytical and risk management skills, including budget preparation and reporting.
  • Demonstrated high-level leadership, collaborative organisational management and organisational development skills, especially in a national setting.
  • Highly developed communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience in strategic and operational planning.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects and deadlines and work well under pressure.
  • Experience working for an environmental NGO.
