International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) Role Description

Role: Market Outreach Director

Location: Negotiable. IPNLF Head Office is in London, UK (or other major European city)

Salary: Competitive for senior management in non-profit sector

Working Hours: Negotiable. 3-5 days a week

Contract term: Fixed-term 12 month contract, with intent to extend (subject to performance and funding)

Introduction to IPNLF

The International Pole & Line Foundation (IPNLF) works to develop, support and promote socially and environmentally responsible pole-and-line and hand-line tuna fisheries around the world. IPNLF’s ambition is to contribute to thriving coastal fisheries, including the people, communities, businesses and seas connected with them. As a hub for sustainably-minded organisations, we use the influence of the market to forge change through practical fishery projects and stakeholder cooperation. IPNLF membership is open to organisations involved in the pole-and-line tuna supply chain, from fishing associations to suppliers, to retailers. Allied with our members, we demonstrate the value of pole-and-line tuna to consumers, policy-makers and throughout the supply chain.

We work across science, policy and the seafood sector, using an evidence-based, solutions-focused approach with guidance from our Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee and Board of Trustees. IPNLF was officially registered in the United Kingdom in 2012 (Charity no.1145586), with a branch office in London, the Maldives and a staff presence in Indonesia, the US and South Africa. www.ipnlf.org

 

Overall Purpose

The Market Outreach Director will lead IPNLF’s work with tuna supply chains. The successful candidate will establish and maintain relationships with IPNLF members and develop new opportunities to work with partners in the retail and food service sectors, such as restaurants, food outlets and education institutions. The Market Outreach Director will work with fisheries outreach staff to develop and support poleand-line and handline tuna fisheries through projects that grows demand for, and improves the global supply of, tuna from these fisheries.

The Market Outreach Director is a senior role in IPNLF - through their conduct and activities this role is anticipated to contribute towards enhancing the support for and status of IPNLF’s work. It is a newly expanded role that will require international travel.


Responsibilities and Activities, include:

Market Outreach and Development

• Overseeing, leading and managing existing IPNLF market outreach projects (and associated staff and consultants).

• Building relationships (alongside other IPNLF staff) with existing IPNLF members - and potential new members - to deepen and broaden IPNLF supply chain engagement.

• Developing and maintaining relationships with retailers, national brands, and private label suppliers.

• Coordinating and organising marketing and communications campaigns with partners.

• Developing strategies to increase IPNLF supply chain network.

• Supporting the IPNLF communications department in the development of marketing and promotional material.

• Coordinating events, including PR events, trade shows and supply chain workshops.

• Maintaining the commercial contacts database.

• Writing and/or overseeing project, meeting and technical reports.

• Tracking work progress, measuring impact, and further advancing IPNLF’s monitoring and evaluation of its effectiveness.

 

Organisational Development

• Representing IPNLF at national and international fora, acting as an ambassador for our Mission and work - and as a public spokesperson where necessary.

• Contributing to communications materials (incl. website, newsletter and social media).

• Actively growing IPNLF fundraising, reporting and funder relations, e.g. - Meetings with current and prospective funders. - Funding proposals and report writing- Helping identify potential new funding sources for IPNLF activities.


Organisational Effectiveness

• Together with IPNLF colleagues, develop an implementation strategy for the IPNLF 3-year strategic plan [see website], and associated activities and tactics.

• Contributing to internal IPNLF planning and project management, e.g. - Staff calls - Scientific & Technical Advisory Committee (STAC) meeting (annual) and email correspondence - Trustee liaison and meetings - General email/Skype/online/etc. contact with fellow team members.

• Helping to develop and manage programmatic budgets.

 

Maximising the value of and for IPNLF's network

• Providing strategic fisheries sustainability advice and IPNLF project information to IPNLF’s network members.

• Helping to identify fisheries development projects and leverage points for and with both IPNLF’s entire member network and individual partner members.

• Using the influence of IPNLF's member network to strengthen the organisation’s policy and advocacy activities.

• Fostering collaborative external relationships (e.g. with partner NGOs) that can optimise efficiency and impact of IPNLF’s work.

 

Desired Expertise, Skills and Qualities include:

• Understanding of, and a commitment to, the mission of IPNLF.

• A university degree (likely higher), in a relevant subject.

• A very good understanding of seafood supply chains, including knowledge of seafood traceability, especially in the tuna sector.

• A good understanding of tuna sustainability issues.

• Interest and experience in social and economic sustainability issues.

• Knowledge of Fisheries Improvement Projects (FIPs) and fisheries development work

• An understanding of the Marine Stewardship Council Principles and process.

• Excellent English written and verbal communication skills, including ability to communicate with a range of audiences including fishers, science, corporate, NGO and government partners.

• Spanish, French or German language skills an added advantage.

• A positive attitude and superior inter-personal skills.

• Strong relationship management skills.

• Ability to work independently with self-motivation and also an amicable team-player.

• A commitment to continuous improvement at organisational and self development level.

• An appreciation of - and sensitivity to - different cultures and norms.

• Computer literacy and willingness to use new IT tools. 

 

General Note About IPNLF Role Descriptions:

The purpose of a job description is to make sure that the individual and the charity are clear about the responsibilities and tasks the post-holder is expected to carry out. As IPNLF operate in a rapidly changing environment it is important that we have flexibility to manage this, as well as accommodate the development of the individual.
