Description

REFERENCE NO: IC3-MCurie-2011
LOCATION: IC3 headquarters in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain

DESCRIPTION:
The Climate Dynamics and Impacts Unit of Catalan Institute of Climate Science from
Barcelona wishes to host an EU Marie Curie Fellows (IIF and IEF) working on a
TROPICS-EXTRATROPICS INTERPLAY AND ENSO LONG-LEAD FORECASTING
PROJECT.
The research work is part of a multi-disciplinary effort conducted to increase our
understanding of the environmental conditions and changes taking place in the high
latitudes of both hemispheres and their role in the modulation of global climate
variability. A particular focus of the candidate’s  work is expected to center on
investigating the role of ENSO in the modulation of high-latitude climate and the
usefulness of extratropical predictors in the forecasting skill of El Niño. The work of the
candidate will be centered along the following research lines:
a) The study of the interaction between the tropical Pacific and the extratropical regions
of the North and South Pacific and the Indian Ocean. The dynamics of these interactions
should be conducted with both observational products and the most up-to-date suite of
dynamical and statistical climate models. b) To design, perform and analyze numerical simulations with an atmosphere-ocean-sea
ice model, with the aim of investigating sea-ice processes in both the Arctic & Antarctic
Oceans and their role in the modulation of global climate variability and change.
QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The applicants are expected to hold a PhD in geophysics, physics, meteorology or
oceanography. Interest and expertise in the role of both sea ice and high latitudes in the
climate system is a precondition as well as a thorough knowledge of Unix, Fortran90,
high-level scripting languages, and visualization tools.
BENEFITS
Full-time 24 months employment contract with a competitive Marie Curie salary.
Salary includes full social security, living expenses, contribution to family-related
expenses, travel allowance and a career-exploratory allowance.
After the Marie Curie Fellowship finishes, there will be the possibility of
applying for tenureship, depending on research accomplishments.
