Under the auspices of the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN), an international coalition of leading conservation groups, the Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable Agriculture Division works with farmers to ensure compliance with the SAN standards for protecting wildlife, farm land, workers’ rights and local communities. Farms that meet these rigorous environmental, ethical and economic standards are awarded the Rainforest Alliance Certified™ seal.

The Sustainable Agriculture Division consists of the Sustainable Landscapes Program, the Sustainable Value Chains Program, the Traceability Unit and Program Administration. The work of the Sustainable Agriculture Division is closely linked to the work of the SAN Secretariat, housed in Rainforest Alliance’s Costa Rica office.  

Position Summary: 

The Manager, Farmer Finance, will build capacity within Rainforest Alliance and its partners in the Sustainable Agriculture Network (SAN) to facilitate farmers’ access to financial services. S/he will establish strategies and develop activities to increase the capacity of staff in agricultural finance and to develop tools to facilitate financial flows to farmers.  

Responsibilities: 
  • Work closely with Rainforest Alliance colleagues in the Sustainable Agriculture Division and Sustainable Finance to define effective strategies and plan activities that will lead to scaling up farmers’ access to financial services;
  • Build and strengthen financial knowledge inside Rainforest Alliance and its partners, ensuring trainers and technical assistance providers can take initiatives to facilitate financial flows to farmers;
  • Help build a portfolio of farmer finance projects and provide technical finance knowledge, guidance and insight to current and proposed agriculture project. Oversee farmer finance activities in projects. Prepare donor reports for finance projects;
  • Collaborate with Rainforest Alliance’s Sustainable Finance staff, especially drawing on their capacity to engage international institutions and networks;
  • Establish relationships with lenders and other project partners and set up innovative collaborative arrangements to overcome barriers to credit flows to farmers;
  • Develop tools and materials that can facilitate the flow of credit to farmers;
  • Coordinate with consultants on agreement scope of work and subsequent deliverables;
  • Coordinate activities with specific external donors, drawing on their expertise and collaborating on activities when appropriate; and
  • Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications: 
  • Bachelor's degree Finance, Agronomy, Economy or related field required, Master’s degree preferred;
  • 7 -10 years experience from financial institutions servicing small agricultural producers, SMEs, micro-financing etc.; familiarity with the agricultural sector strongly preferred;
  • Fluent Spanish and high level English required, including ability to read and write reports in English;
  • Experience with sustainability concepts essential and with certification programs preferred;
  • Personal drive and excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal;
  • Strong team-based orientation and familiarity with project management; and
  • Ability and willingness to travel 30% of the time nationally and internationally. 
Salary: 

Commensurate with experience.
