ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

The Landscape Ecologist provides novel scientific analysis to identify creative solutions for achieving conservation success in the face of ongoing development. The Landscape Ecologist will be a part of the North America Region’s Science Team and requires the ability to think and work at a regional and national scope. Essential skills include generating spatial models of areas susceptible to development for residential, agricultural, or energy production uses; optimization analyses to identify areas where conservation investments would have the largest return on investment; generating predictive land use change models; and analyses to identify conservation approaches that will be most resilient to climate change.

 

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in science-related field and 3 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience manipulating, analyzing, and interpreting spatial data on land use and natural communities.
  • Experience with predictive statistical spatial modeling and methods associated with model validation and spatial uncertainty.
  • Experience with complex analytical methods utilizing programming languages (e.g., Python, R, C++).
  • Experience with land use change and spatial optimization analyses.
  • Record of peer-reviewed publications relating to landscape ecology and spatial modeling.
  • Experience participating on cross-functional teams.
 

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in science-related field and 3 years experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of current trends and practices in landscape ecology and spatial modeling.
  • Advanced knowledge of spatial software (for example, ArcGIS and geodatabases) and programming languages (e.g., Python, R, C++)
  • Ability to communicate clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means.
  • Peer-reviewed publication record.
  • Ability to write grants and research proposals.
  • Knowledge of basic remote sensing data methods.
  • Strong desire to preserve life on Earth
 

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT:

The Landscape Ecologist may occasionally work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.  These conditions may:

  • require physical exertion and/or muscular strain
  • present possibility of injury
