It is based on effective landscape-scale environment protection and ecologically sustainable development reflecting the unique natural and cultural values in Australia’s North, promoted through cooperation between Indigenous and non-Indigenous communities.
The key principles of the program are a two way approach, based on strong partnerships, listening to and understanding Indigenous people, improving the social and economic well-being of Indigenous communities, using world class conservation models and dealing with underlying issues.
POSITION PURPOSE The Kimberley Program Officer will support ACF’s program work across Northern Australia with a specific focus on the Kimberley.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES - Lead ACF’s work in the Kimberley region and develop and manage diverse projects that deliver strong environmental and cultural outcomes in alignment with ACF’s strategic plan to increase Indigenous led conservation through land and sea management initiatives and support the emergence of a culture and conservation economy.
- Initiate, develop and maintain strong and effective relationships with key Indigenous communities, non-Indigenous communities and organisations, businesses and other environment groups in the Kimberley and, where appropriate, across northern Australia in a collaborative and sensitive manner.
- Provide leadership and strategic advice to ensure the Northern Australia Program meets its conservation and cultural goals, and contributes to other ACF processes in liaison with the Program Manager.
- Undertake research and analysis relevant to the Northern Australia Program, to develop regional programs and to inform the ACF’s policy and project work.
- Represent ACF at relevant forums, engage with relevant local projects and ensure ACF maintains and develops strong and effective relationships.
- Work collaboratively with ACF’s communications staff to ensure effective coordination of ACF public messages and positioning, and promote ACF to the media, target audiences and the public on topics relevant to the Northern Australia Program.
- Participate in fundraising and marketing initiatives for the Northern Australia Program, collaboratively prepare funding submissions, and support major donor relationships and engagement with ACF members and supporters.
- Other duties as required by Northern Australia Program Manager.
EXPERIENCE, SKILLS AND PERSONAL ATTRIBUTES REQUIRED - Strong appreciation of and commitment to the vision, values and objectives of ACF.
- Demonstrated advocacy experience within the Indigenous and environment movements.
- Demonstrated experience working with Indigenous communities in the area of natural resources management, land and sea management and conservation issues.
- Demonstrated success in engaging and working collaboratively with Indigenous communities and organisations.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and managing strategic relationships.
- Good analytical and report writing skills.
- Excellent written and oral communication skills and the capacity to represent ACF publicly through media and public speaking events.
- Demonstrated planning, organisational, and project management skills.
- Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively and contribute to a team.
- Tertiary qualification in public policy, natural resource management or related fields would be an advantage.
Note – significant intra and interstate travel will be required
