Job Title:    Kimberley Campaigner
Location:    The Wilderness Society WA’s Campaign Centre in West Perth.
Salary:        $54,500-$57,500 p.a. plus superannuation and other entitlements 
Hours:        Full time (37.5 hours per week – with time off in lieu for necessary after hours work)
Period:     3 year contract, with possibility of extension.
Probation:    The successful applicant will be subject to a four month probationary period.

The Position

WA’s Kimberley is one of the world’s last great intact ecological and Indigenous cultural regions.

However, the Kimberley region is under unprecedented pressure as a result of government and corporate plans for large scale industrialisation, including oil, gas and other mining and mineral processing activity; expanded irrigated agriculture; trawling and coastal development. At the same time the region is facing an extinction crisis due to the combined impacts of introduced pests, destructive fire regimes and climate change.

Working as part of the TWS WA campaign team, the Kimberley Campaigner will play a central role in TWS WA’s Kimberley campaign, with a focus on the immediate threat of the proposed gas hub at James Price Point.  The objectives of the broader campaign are to improve protection of the Kimberley marine and terrestrial environment; remove or reduce threats to the region’s environment, and promote the ‘conservation economy’ based on the region’s unique natural and cultural values and assets. 

The Kimberley Campaigner will be based in the TWS WA West Perth offices, and will work in close collaboration with The Wilderness Society WA’s State Campaigns Manager, the WA campaign team, and The Wilderness Society’s national campaign staff.

Primary tasks and responsibilities

The position will involve a diverse, challenging and exciting range of responsibilities and activities, including:

  • Help implement the Wilderness Society’s campaign to prevent polluting industrialisation of the Kimberley coast, with a focus on the James Price Point gas hub;
  • Continue to build community interest and  involvement in TWS’s Kimberley campaigns;
  • Be with a focus on the immediate threat of the proposed gas hub at James Price Point.  The objectives of the broader campaign are to improve protection of the Kimberley marine and terrestrial environment; remove or reduce threats to the region’s environment, and promote the ‘conservation economy’ based on the region’s unique natural and cultural values and assets.
  • Familiar with government decision making bodies and processes relevant to the Kimberley, and represent TWS through regular engagement;
  • Work closely and collaboratively with local Kimberley conservation and community organisations;
  • Undertake lobbying of government and industry groups to improve conservation outcomes in the Kimberley;
  • Build on existing relationships with Traditional Owners and Indigenous organisations;
  • Develop and implement effective communications strategies and act as an media spokesperson;
  • Develop and maintain a good knowledge of conservation issues across the Kimberley;
  • Help coordinate the writing of submissions as required;
  • Provide regular reports to The Wilderness Society WA Management Committee. 

Secondary tasks and responsibilities

  • Provide support for The Wilderness Society’s fundraising activities by actively identifying funding opportunities and by working with TWS fundraising personnel, in WA and nationally.
  • Support other campaign staff in co-ordinating, motivating and training volunteers.
  • Actively promote awareness and understanding of the WildCountry vision and other work of The Wilderness Society among other organisations and in the wider community.
  • Attend the WA Campaign Centre’s Wilderness Action Group meetings as requested.

As part of the TWS WA campaign team, the position will involve maintaining and building positive relationships with key partners and funding bodies such as environmental philanthropic organisations to ensure adequate resources are available for all TWS WA work.

Accountabilities

The Kimberley Campaigner is accountable through the State Campaigns Manager to the Wilderness Society WA’s Management Committee. The position is managed by the State Campaigns Manager.

Essential Selection Criteria

  • Commitment to the Wilderness Society’s purpose and values.
  • Excellent written and oral communication and advocacy skills.
  • Experience in environmental or related advocacy work.
  • A good understanding of environment issues and how engagement with political institutions and processes can deliver conservation outcomes.
  • Excellent skills in working in teams, including motivation, attention to detail and time management.
  • Ability to engage effectively with the media to increase public awareness of key campaign messages.
  • Good computer skills
  • Ability to travel to regional locations for meetings and other work on an occasional basis.

Desirable selection criteria

  • A university or similar qualification in a relevant field
  • Experience and willingness to work with volunteers.
