Oceana seeks an IT Director to lead the Information Technology Team from its international headquarters in Washington, DC. Oceana is an international policy advocacy organization for marine conservation. Its mission is to restore our oceans to former levels of abundance. Oceana has approximately 125 staff located in six countries and a budget of approximately $20 million.

Oceana operates with clear goals. It defines important, measurable policy changes that it seeks to be made in a defined period, usually three to five years. Its fact-based campaigns combine science, law, communications, lobbying, and organizing. To support its information technology, Oceana is looking for a unique individual who can contribute at a strategic level to the technological issues in this important organization and who is also comfortable performing the tactical demands of an efficient global organization.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Ensuring timely, quality-oriented computer support services to 125+ users and 150+ computers in 11+ International offices across 10+ time zones
  • Managing the IT team to
    • Provide and ensure day-to-day global administration and maintenance of Windows 2003/7 application, file and mail servers, switches, routers and firewalls
    • Provide and ensure database services for the constituent management system, the online activist management system and accounting system
    • Provide and ensure active website development and global web services
  • Maintaining the effective ability to recover from unplanned network, web and database outages and equipment failures 
  • Maintaining relevant documentation 
  • Determining, planning and implementing upgrades to provide efficient, effective, and timely service to staff
  • Managing and supports global IT projects
  • Managing the IT budget and global telecom expenses
  • Coordinating with the Leadership Team to manage time and tasks appropriately
  • This role will travel to our satellite offices in a routine and regular manner.

Education/Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in IT or related field or equal experience.
  • 8+ years’ experience with IT Systems and Network Management
  • Proven ability in project management
  • Knowledge of IT budgeting with an emphasis on Non-profit Budgeting
  • Ability to manage effectively and elicit cooperation among IT team members; ability to work with others across the organization
  • Ability to think systematically about creating and implementing organization-wide policies to improve IT effectiveness
  • Experience with international IT services
  • Ability to actively identify ways to improve and promote staff effectiveness
  • Works with limited supervision and possesses a high energy level. Must be multi-task oriented.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Windows Server, Microsoft Windows XP/7, Microsoft Exchange Server/Outlook Client and Microsoft Office XP/2003/2010 is essential.
  • Knowledge of telephone system/PBX/voicemail administration
  • Knowledge of network administration and usage of system utility tools.
  • Knowledge of Database administration: CRM and CMS solutions
  • Knowledge of Web systems and servers
  • Experience with the installation, repair and maintenance of computer hardware, software and peripherals.
  • Networking and Telecommunications: Firewalls, Routers, hubs, csu/dsus, understanding of TCP/IP WANs and LANs
