11/04/14-14/04/14
Lichens in Scotland are conspicuous and diverse (about 1,500 species), and they form an important part of our natural heritage. This weekend course is an introductory-level course, explaining what lichens are, how they are distributed and function in the landscape, and how they can be distinguished in the field. We will begin with the basics of lichen biology, ecology, identification, and collecting, spending time both indoors and out on the first day. On the second day, we will spend time using dissecting microscopes and keys, and students are encouraged to bring specimens of their own to examine. During this introductory course, students can expect to gain a working knowledge of common lichens and to prepare a small reference collection for future study. This is the first of two courses which are run consecutively, and participants can choose to attend one or both of these, depending on their levels of expertise and interest. Students, citizen-scientists, recorders, naturalists, photographers, and artists will all find something to learn and enjoy.
