Improve your identification skills and learn about the ecology of freshwater macroinvertebrates. This is a course for both beginners and those with experience of working in the freshwater environment who wish to increase their taxonomic and ecological knowledge.
The Malham estate has a variety of aquatic habitats including the tarn itself, ponds, streams and bogs. You will also have the opportunity to examine preserved specimens, provided by the tutors, from other locations.
The course will include: - Field collecting techniques - Preservation and curation of wet specimens - Use of identification keys, including to species level for most groups - Information on life histories
By the end of the course participants should be confident about using field techniques for collecting and preserving specimens. They should be able to recognise many aquatic insects, both adults and juveniles and other macroinvertebrates to Class, Order and Family level in the field and should be confident in the use of microscopes and identification keys to family and species level in the laboratory.
