The WBCSD is seeking an intern to join the Climate & Energy team to support our work on climate policy. This is a position for a period of 6 months from May 1st to November 30th 2017 with a 1 month break during the summer, based at the WBCSD offices in Geneva, Switzerland, reporting to the Climate Policy Manager. This is a very unique opportunity which will give the successful candidate a high level of exposure to climate policy-making during the UNFCCC COP23 and an increasing level of responsibilities.

Main tasks include:

  • Support to key climate policy events: The Climate & Energy team is running a number of events in 2017. The intern shall support the team to organise workshops at these events, including developing the agenda and managing the invitation process for speakers and participants, documentation preparation and logistics. This will also include the support and coordination of:
    • The 7th conference of the Low Carbon Technology Partnership Initiative at the Economic and Social Committee in Brussels (19-20 June 2017);
    • The 2nd edition of the Low Emissions Solutions Conference in Bonn (12-14 November 2017);
    • Other events including the climate policy workshop in Geneva in September and off-site support to the WBCSD Council meeting in Mexico.
  • Provide research and analysis to support the work of WBCSD on climate policy, including on the Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs) and their sectoral coverage in relation to the Low Carbon Technology Partnership initiatives. This will include the preparation of short policy briefs on the NDCs, starting with a list of target countries.
  • Support to communications and outreach: Drafting content for Climate & Energy outreach communications and the new website.
  • Ad hoc administrative support to the Climate & Energy team as required.

 Required competencies include:

  • Bachelor’s university degree level education from a field such as sustainability, climate or energy.
  • Previous internships or work experience in these fields may be accepted in lieu of a bachelor’s degree.
  • Basic understanding of key climate change and energy debates and developments.
  • Knowledge of the UN system and the UNFCCC negotiating process would be an asset.
  • Excellent organizational and coordination skills; experience managing events and conferences.
  • Good research and analysis skills.
  • Good team spirit and the ability to work effectively across cultures.
  • Capacity to be assertive and take initiative when appropriate.
  • Successfully manage competing priorities and ad hoc demands, flexible working style, identify and proactively address problems, working to deadlines.
  • Fluent in English (written and spoken), fluency in additional languages is an advantage.
  • Knowledge of Chinese/Mandarin would be an additional asset.

The WBCSD will organize the Swiss working permit application for the successful candidate and this process is simplified for candidates who are Swiss or currently holders of a valid Swiss working permit.
