Sedges are often considered to be difficult to identify and ignored in the field. However many are not only important components of our flora but also fascinating plants in their own right and so this course has been devised. A combination of fieldwork and laboratory sessions will ensure that we shall not only master the identification of a substantial number of species but also gain understanding of their structure and terminology which will help unlock the use of keys and other resources.
Rhyd-y-creuau is well placed to give access to a wide variety of sedge habitats from Snowdonia to acid bogs and dunes on Anglesey and the timing and location of this course has been chosen to ensure that we will be able to access a very wide range of plants both in flower and in fruit. Some uphill walking and muddy terrain is therefore inevitable. You do not need any particular botanical background, just an interest in discovering more.
