09/08/14 - 13/08/14
Identifying Mossess and Liverworts is a course covering many habitats to immerse moss enthusiasts in an intense combination of field and laboratory techniques for identification. The range of habitats will include woodlands, moorland and valley bogs and the banks of streams and large rivers. The floras of contrasting rock types such as limestones, sandstones and acid igneous rocks will be examined and an introduction given to the bryology of superficially unpromising habitats such as arable fields and paths. The daily excursions will form the basis for an understanding of the principles of bryophtye ecology and recording. Fieldwork will be followed by workshops to further identification skills through use of microscope and detailed keys, and by discussions of natural propagation, reproductive behaviour and species distribution.
