The International Fund for Animal Welfare (IFAW) works to improve the welfare of wild and domestic animals throughout the world by reducing commercial exploitation of animals, protecting wildlife habitats, and assisting animals in distress. With offices in 16 countries and projects in more than 60 countries and the oceans of the world, IFAW is recognized as one of the leading animal welfare organizations. The Internationaler Tierschutz-Fonds gGmbH (IFAW Germany) seeks to hire an Officer of Major and Legacy Giving. After forming a Resource Development Department at IFAW’s headquarter in 2003 and a Major and Legacy Giving Unit in the UK in 2005, Germany is the next important step in rolling out a consistent Resource Development Strategy for IFAW’s major markets. 
 

Purpose

The Head of Major and Legacy Giving, Germany plans and directs the major and legacy giving program of IFAW Germany. Using the moves management technique, s/he oversees the identification, qualification, solicitation and stewardship practices to increase revenue from individual and legacy gifts and achieve internationally agreed fundraising targets. S/he reports to the Director of Resource Development (HQ) and the Director of IFAW Germany. S/he works closely with the Heads of Major and Legacy Giving in the US and UK and also the Director of Donor Advancement and Stewardship (HQ) to ensure that effective systems are in place for communication and publication materials, prospect research, donor stewardship and recognition, funding priorities and database reports.

Accountabilities/Responsibilities
  • Responsible for the major and legacy giving program of IFAW Germany.
  • Responsible for the strategic management, identification, cultivation, solicitation and stewardship of donors and prospects with a giving potential of 1,000 Euros and higher.
  • Responsible for a mature legacy marketing and administration program.
  • Grows a new major gifts program in Germany.
  • Manages one Officer of Major and Legacy Giving (likely more in the future).
  • Develops, executes and manages annual plans with goals, objectives and outcomes.
  • Meets annual fundraising goals and objectives, manages income and expense budget and monitors annual forecasts for major and legacy giving sources.
  • Represents IFAW to donors and prospects and effectively communicates IFAW’s case for support for programs and projects; engages in a plan for continuous learning about IFAW’s work in order to convey news to donors and prospects.
  • Manages a portfolio of 150 mid-level, major gift and legacy prospects for contacts and visits, through to closure; reports monthly on progress of moves management of prospects.
  • Recommends and manages prospect visits and events for major and legacy gift prospects for CEO, Country Director, Officer(s) of Major and Legacy Giving and Program Staff and staffs these initiatives.
  • Manages German prospect strategy meetings.
  • Works and reports on a worldwide database system.
  • Keeps up to date with the latest German legislation (including tax) regarding major and legacy giving.
  • Works closely with the Financial Officer to ensure a proactive approach to legacy administration, including correspondence, enquiries, payments, crediting and stewardship.
  • Undertakes any other duties consistent with the post.

Requirements

  • Substantial experience with successful major gift and legacy fundraising in increasingly responsible management positions (minimum 5 years).
  • Familiarity with techniques for major donor cultivation, solicitation and stewardship with a proven track record of working with high-level philanthropic donors and closing high-level gifts.
  • Proven track record of successfully employing legacy programs.
  • Effective negotiating skills and a high degree of tenacity and interpersonal sensitivity.
  • Experience with major gift techniques using successful moves management tracking.
  • Proven ability to manage and motivate staff, including coaching and mentoring and the ability to lead through example, as well as work in a team environment.
  • Practiced ability to interact in a persuasive and professional manner with a wide variety of people and ability to work effectively and maintain positive relationships with staff members and external constituents.
  • Maturity, poise, initiative, flexibility, self-motivation and ability to handle complex situations and sensitive confidential information with professionalism.
  • Excellent communication and networking skills with an ability to work within a diverse team spread over two continents.
  • Superior oral and written communication and presentation skills and experience in preparing persuasive letters, proposals, reports and presentations.
  • Fluency in reading, writing and speaking German and English.
  • Evidence of extensive experience living and working in a German-speaking country.
  • Ability and willingness to locate to Hamburg fulltime, travel flexibly within Germany and work outside regular office hours.
  • Computer literacy with an attention to detail.
  • Interest in animal welfare desirable.
