Senior Technical Consultant
Location: Milton Keynes
Position Type: Permanent; Full Time (flexible)
Salary: £30,000 to £35,000 (up to £50,000 for exceptional candidates with a track record of winning and delivering significant consultancy contracts)

This senior consultant role will have frontline responsibility for winning and delivering consultancy projects which involve renewable energy and energy efficiency in delivering carbon savings. They will also lead teams in the delivery of key projects. NEF projects vary and the successful applicant will need to be highly flexible and prepared to be involved in a wide variety of tasks according to the work required. The breadth of potential projects we engage in provides the successful candidate with a greater degree of freedom than they are likely to find in any other climate change related role in the UK.

Our key areas of current work include:

* Small to Medium Scale Renewable Energy, especially building integrated systems;
* Energy and Carbon management in organisations, including motivation and
behavioural changes;
* Sustainability and energy strategies and simulations for residential and commercial
construction projects;
* Pre-planning Design Advice for both new-build residential & non-residential.
Role and Responsibilities:
The post holder will be responsible for:
* Winning and delivering consultancy services on building related energy systems
including renewable energy technologies;
* Providing technical support to the various projects and activities of the NEF;
* Leading technical input for proposals.
Other activities may include:
* Delivering training courses;
* Developing (technical and non-technical) information and case studies for the
website;
* Preparing sustainability and energy statements (e.g. planning and BREEAM related
energy requirements);
* Conducting energy performance and carbon reduction simulations for both residential
and commercial construction projects (e.g. familiar with NHER, IES);
* In bound calls on both technical and non-technical queries;
* Understanding life cycle costs analysis.

Essential Skills and Qualifications

The post holder should have relevant qualifications including a first Degree in Sustainable Energy, Building Services Engineering or a Construction related discipline and have at least 2 years experience in a number of the following areas:

* Clear track record on winning and delivering consultancy projects in the energy
sector; candidates should be able to demonstrate bringing £100-250K of business per year;
* In depth understanding of carbon reduction in some or all of the following aspects:
energy efficiency, sustainable energy technologies, carbon footprinting, energy
modeling and sustainability;
* Experience of working with commercial and public sector clients;
* Excellent presentation skills and report and proposal writing;
* Ability to deliver projects to a high standard and within tight budgets and timeframes;
* Energy monitoring;
* Energy and carbon management.
* Energy Assessments (e.g. OCDEA accredited)
* Sustainability Assessments (Licensed Code for Sustainable Homes Assessor & BREEAM for schools desirables)
* In depth knowledge of Part L1a/b/2 Building Regulations
* Understand current energy related planning requirements
* In depth knowledge of Energy sections of the Code for Sustainable Homes Guidance
* Understanding of current best practice in energy efficient design
* Understanding of low and zero carbon products and the appropriate solutions for the application within new and existing buildings
* Understands building processes and procurement issues
* Product Development

The post holder should be able to show his/her ability to:

* Win his/her own work with NEF customers
* Write technical document for non-technical readers
* Deliver consultancy projects within tight timescales
* Deliver presentation to a non-technical public
* Undertake research work, analyse and present results
* Check and comment on plans, specifications, and calculations with regards to energy related issues for both Part L1a/b/2 Building Regulations, Code for Sustainable Homes and other legislative drivers
* Prepare sustainability and/or energy statements for planning and BREEAM related
requirements

Experience in both the private and public sector would be an advantage.

The post holder will also need to possess in depth knowledge of energy rating
measurement software (e.g. NHER Plan Assessor) and have a proficiency in using
Microsoft Excel and other Microsoft Office software, be a good communicator and a team
player.

Desirable

* Technical background (engineering or science, first or higher degree) with several years experience in carbon reduction
* In depth knowledge of building services/energy systems
* Technical knowledge of a number of the following technologies: solar water heating,
ground source and air source heat pumps, photovoltaics, grid connection for small scale electrical generation, wood fuel supplies (including pellets), wood burning heating systems, microwind and microchp
* Knowledge of Building Regulations and their application in practice
* Member of CIBSE, the Energy Institute or similar and potentially qualified to undertake NHER, BREEAM, Carbon Trust site advice or similar assessments
