11/04/14-13/04/14
Whether you are new to pond dipping, or regularly take young people to look at what live in a nearby stream, this course aims to both develop your knowledge of freshwater invertebrates and ecology as well as consider different techniques which can be used to structure outdoor learning sessions with young people. We will spend time on identification to family, genus and species level, as well as discussing energy flow through aquatic ecosystems. We will also trial different techniques and activities which can be used with young people during learning sessions.
The course will include a visit to a local 'clean' stream or river near the Centre, ponds in the Centre grounds and a stream site affected by organic pollution. At each site we will take samples back to identify organisms down to family, genus and species level. There will also be detailed discussion of how different organisms are adapted to their habitat. The activities we will trial will include ways to structure investigations for older students (such as A-level groups) and younger primary school groups.
