OCEANA, a results-oriented global non-profit dedicated to protecting and restoring the world’s oceans, is seeking a Foundations Associate for our headquarters in Washington, DC.   Join us and become a part of an exciting and rewarding team committed to excellence.

As our Foundations Associate, you will work with the Foundations team to secure and manage foundation grants for the organization, including writing, research, and administrative functions to meet our foundation goals.  In addition, you will draft select grant requests and be responsible for the organization and maintenance of foundation-related information.  Flexibility to meet new deadlines and urgent requests which arise frequently is required in the fast paced position.

OCEANA’s Foundation Associate position offers an opportunity for growth, creativity, and initiative.  This is a substantial and interesting position that involves interaction with all departments within OCEANA as well as our regional offices.  This position will report to the Foundations Director.

Responsibilities include:

  • Drafting select grant proposals, letters of inquiry, reports, and grant acknowledgements.
  • Devising and implementing plans to cultivate foundation prospects and steward current funders.
  • Keeping current foundation funders and key prospects informed about Oceana’s work through quarterly informational updates, targeted emails, invitations to events, etc.
  • Developing and maintaining communications schedule for funders and prospects.
  • Researching foundation prospects in the United States and elsewhere, and helping to prioritize prospects that are identified.  Maintaining organization of prospects.
  • Arranging and scheduling meetings with foundation representatives for Oceana staff.
  • Preparing background briefings for meetings with foundation representatives.
  • Maintaining foundation donor files in fundraising database (iMIS) and on Development shared drive.
  • Liaising with Finance/Accounting staff and others to help ensure accurate recording of grant information.  
  • Staying informed of Oceana campaign updates and accomplishments via Oceana’s press releases, blog, internal reports/publications, etc.

The successful candidate will have:

  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent.
  • At least one to two years of development experience preferred.
  • Superior writing and verbal communications skills in English (grant writing experience preferred but not required).
  • Strong organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft office suite software and internet research tools.
  • Self-motivated, self-starter, and team player able to meet deadlines, and have the ability to handle many tasks simultaneously with speed, accuracy, and courtesy. 
  • Ability to take initiative in achieving foundation-related goals.
