Description

This position will coordinate AWF’s Congo Landscape forestry and climate change interventions. The incumbent will also assist the Senior Project Officer in planning and monitoring of the implementation of Land Use Plans and in addressing drivers of deforestation in the landscape. He will also reinforce capacities of stakeholders on Global Climate Change issues and facilitate the buy in and adoption of microzones by competent authorities from the local to the national level.

The position reports to the Congo Landscape Manager, and will be based in Boendé, Democratic Republic of Congo.

Responsibilities

Support Maringa Lopori Wamba Community Forestry Program

  • Finalize the process of establishment and official recognition of community forests in the landscape.
  • Prepare in collaboration with the GIS Officer all the process of official recognition of microzones by authorities from the local to the provincial level.
  • Supervise agroforestry initiatives established in the landscape.
  • Elaborate and validate with a participatory approach Land Use Management Plans for microzones and community forests.
  • Obtain the signature of management agreement with communities.
  • In collaboration with the PA Natural Resources Governance, put in place governance bodies as planned in the decree on community forests.
  • Identify training needs and build capacities of stakeholders for a good management of community forests.
  • Formally establish a formal status to the CBRNM of Yala.
  • Monitor and evaluate the implementation of Land Use Management Plans for community forests.
  • Collect field data, prepare and share lessons learnt from the pilot process of community forests establishment in MLW landscape.
  • Work with logging concessions in the landscape on sustainable management principles are adopted and implemented.

Support Climate Change component of the Project

  • Assess the greenhouse gas emissions reduced, sequestered or avoided in the landscape.
  • Assist in building capacities of stakeholders on Global Climate Change issues in the landscape.
  • Organize the restitution of the CADJOBE REDD+ Project Description Document (PDD) to key stakeholders and monitor the implementation of recommendations.
  • Provide assistance to the new provinces in the development and implementation of Provincial REDD+ Strategies.
  • Implement field activities identified by DRC team to tackle the drivers of deforestation identified in the landscape.
  • Work with the Landscape Manager to develop the post CAFEC regarding climate change.
  • Develop in collaboration with the landscape manager and Program Design proposals and contribute to fund raising for climate change component of AWF DRC Programme.
  • Contribute to the supervision and implement any other responsibilities as designated by the supervisor.

Qualifications

  • Master’s degree or equivalent in agronomy, agroforestry, forestry or climate change.
  • Minimum 5 years post degree direct experience in integrating the ecological, economic, and social aspects of forest, biodiversity, and climate change management programs in tropical forest environments.
  • Experience in conducting agroforestry initiatives.
  • Knowledge and demonstrated interest in species, landscape conservation and management.
  • Commitment to AWF mission and understanding of issues faced by AWF in delivering its mission.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, articulate forestry issues through timely high-quality professional reports.
  • Proven experience in capacity building.
  • Significant dexterity with computer packages including word, databases, storage, statistical analyses, reporting and internet skills.
  • Ability to work both as part of a team and also work independently as needed.
  • Must be flexible, culturally sensitive, and exude a “team” attitude.
  • Willingness and ability to live and work in remote and physically strenuous conditions.
