Description

04/07/14 - 07/07/14

Kindrogan is well placed for finding over 30 ferns and clubmosses with several uncommon species in the neighbourhood. Advice is given on suitable books, the use of keys and which ferns are most likely to be found in particular habitats. Species are viewed in context and while ferns are the main focus other plant groups, birds, land use and the underlying geology are discussed. For the more experienced there is a reference collection of ferns in cultivation at Kindrogan and this extends the range that can be examined.

A reasonable level of fitness is necessary as many of the sites are on uneven, sometimes steep slopes. The evenings are used to reinforce the species seen and to prepare for the following day. Microscope techniques are demonstrated for those who require a high level of identification skills with the more difficult groups.
