Recognition of patterns of evolution is the key to understanding the hierarchical nature of classifications and hence the necessity of a 'top down' approach to identification! From family to genus, to species. In general, the properties which define a family are quite different from those used to describe genera and these in turn differ from those used to identify species. The evolutionary basis of plant classification will be described in a series of illustrated lectures. The use of keys and Floras will be demonstrated in the laboratory and diagnostic features will be examined, using hand lenses or microscopes as necessary. A series of short excursions will allow these skills to be put into practice in the field. A printed manual is provided. Further details are available on request, either from Kindrogan or via the links at 'enquiringmind.org'.
