BirdLife International is a global Partnership of autonomous, national non-governmental conservation organisations, with a large grassroots membership, in 117 countries and territories. BirdLife works together as a Partnership to conserve wild birds, their habitats and global biodiversity, by working with people towards sustainability in the use of natural resources. BirdLife is the global authority on the status of bird species, has unparalleled technical expertise in bird and biodiversity assessment, and provides a global outreach through its national Partners and decentralised Secretariat.
BirdLife Europe is the European Division of BirdLife International, and is one of the six BirdLife regional offices around the world. It is composed of an international team of permanent staff working on conservation, capacity building, policy, management, finance, fundraising, advocacy, science, communication, marketing and administration. Stichting BirdLife Europe supports the European and Central Asia Partnership of BirdLife International.
OVERALL PURPOSE OF JOB
To ensure the development and implementation of BirdLife’s European and Central Asian strategies and programmes in Conservation Action and Science, in coordination with the global Conservation and Science Departments of BirdLife International.
Main duties

To lead the development of, implement and review strategies for meeting the conservation action and science needs of BirdLife’s global programmes, from a regional perspective.

In particular to lead the regional implementation of BirdLife’s Important Bird and Biodiversity Area Programme.

To identify current and future research needs, and to design and coordinate suitable projects to meet them.

To enable the BirdLife Partnership to collate, verify, analyse, interpret and disseminate bird data in the most effective way.

To ensure the maximum effectiveness of research programmes of the regional Partnership, by providing ongoing support, training and guidance, with emphasis on the use of the World Bird Database or any other suitable tool.

To plan funding requirements of regional conservation action and science work, help produce fundraising proposals, manage cost centre budgets, and help ensure reporting requirements are met.

To ensure that the high standards of regional data are maintained and enhanced, and that thedata management and update cycles work effectively and meet the needs of the regional programme.

To support the data and analysis needs of BirdLife Europe’s regional Task Forces and other European advocacy projects, by preparing periodic assessments, reviews and reports of key data sets.

To manage research contracts and data requests from relevant organisations and individuals.

To be responsible for recruiting, managing and training regional conservation and science managers, officers and assistants.
- To advocate as appropriate BirdLife’s global conservation and science objectives within the region, and to ensure that regional approaches and standards help inform and are in line with global ones.
Other duties
- To provide ongoing advice to the Information Management Department on the future development of the World Bird Database and the Data Zone, to ensure that regional needs are met.
- To convene project steering committees as appropriate.
- To participate in relevant programme/project teams and working groups as appropriate.
- To represent BirdLife at external technical meetings and in steering groups as appropriate.
