Citizens' Environment Watch encourages increased understanding of, and engagement with local environments through projects that integrate education, monitoring and follow up action. We help our participants reconnect to local ecosystems, monitor and improve ecosystem health, and participate in community decision-making.

Citizens’ Environment Watch offers unique, engaging environmental education programs for teachers and secondary school students, including Wattwize and Changing Currents.

Position Description:

We are looking for a dynamic, motivated and well organized individual to coordinate and deliver our education program in the Greater Toronto Area (and into the Greenbelt). This is a full-time contract, initially for four months. This post will be responsible for ensuring we meet targets by the end of the school year. Therefore the successful candidate must be a fast learner and be ready to ‘hit the ground running’.

Position Responsibilities/Tasks:

  • Deliver workshops to both teacher and student audiences
  • Liaise with teachers and provide telephone/email support throughout the implementation of class projects
  • Work with assistants to ensure that database is accurate and up to date
  • Develop educational materials & resources
  • Work with consultant to develop website
  • Conduct evaluation of projects
  • Monitor and report on progress regarding program targets
  • Work with Executive Director to identify and develop funding proposals
  • Manage two part time education assistants
  • Ensure that projects continue to be relevant to the curricular requirements
  • Other duties as required.

Essential Qualifications:

  • University/college degree in education and/or an environmentally-related discipline
  • Experience in working with youth (preferably in the formal education system)
  • Experience in workshop facilitation
  • Able to work independently and manage time efficiently
  • Experience of managing the development of materials for print
  • Experience of working with consultants (e.g. managing development of materials or website)
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proven experience in people or volunteer management
  • Experience with project management and evaluation
  • An interest in environmental monitoring and stewardship
  • Valid ‘G’ driver’s license and access to a car
  • Valid Criminal Reference (or be willing to apply for one within the first two weeks of employment)
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Teaching experience (elementary and/or secondary)
  • Successful track record in writing funding proposals

Employment Type: four days per week (contract until 30th November with high possibility of contract extension to at least June 2010 and option to increase to full time hours. This is subject to funding availability.

Location: Toronto, ON
Compensation: $34,000 per annum, pro rata
