Engineering Project Manager

Providing Technical Support to worldwide, front line ocean science.

National Marine Facilities - Sea Systems (NMF-SS), National Oceanography Centre (NOC), Southampton

About the role :

Our Project Managers can go from project managing the commissioning of robotic submarine systems in the Caribbean one week to performing a factory acceptance test on a cutting edge hydrographic winch system the next. They can manage multi-million pound research cruises bringing together the expertise of scientists and engineers from around the world and deploying them on ships from the Polar Ice Caps to the deepest parts of the ocean.

We know more about the surface of the moon than we do about the bottom of the sea.  The oceans contain the world’s largest ecosystem and are responsible for transferring heat around the planet.  Exploring and discovering this huge wilderness requires a vast array of equipment from simple grabs that can take a sediment sample from the sea bed 6000 metres below the surface to unmanned vehicles, packed with sophisticated electronics hunting new life forms in the darkest reaches of the ocean.  All this is only possible with the backing of a team of highly skilled technicians.  We are looking to appoint a highly skilled, motivated and adventurous Engineer to manage projects within the NMF-SS team to support the delivery of the NERC marine facilities programme, planning, coordinating and managing the NMF-SS component of marine science projects across the programme. The post will also provide sea-going support for marine science projects.

The post-holder will be based at our Centre in Southampton as well as working at sea and managing and supporting ship mobilisation periods worldwide.

This is a permanent position offered on NERC terms and conditions.

Salary:

The salary is in the range of £26,715 to £30,000 per annum (plus additional allowance of approximately £4,000 at current rates for time spent at sea (approximately 45 days).

About you:

You will hold a relevant engineering degree or equivalent, candidates without a degree who have the relevant experience and background will also be considered. Relevant background and experience for this role includes; substantial experience in the delivery of marine science and/or marine or earth sciences and an energy, drive and commitment to fulfil the vision and objectives of the organisation to deliver a top quality project management capability to the UK marine science community.

You must be able to work effectively within and often lead multi-disciplinary teams, have excellent communication skills at all levels and the ability to exercise effective self-reliance and judgement when operating remotely from base.

The role will include periods of travel both within the UK and internationally, and interacting with scientists working at the forefront of research across a broad range of disciplines within the marine and Earth sciences. Experience at sea is desirable but not crucial.

What we can offer you:

In return for your talents, we offer a competitive remuneration and benefits package including a UK SBS pension scheme, 30 days annual leave with a further 10.5 Public/privilege days and free car-parking.  Opportunities for further training and development are supported.

If you wish to discuss any of the above position then please contact Colin Day, Programme Manager at: cdy@noc.ac.uk.
