The EMBARQ Global Development Division is responsible for facilitating the development and administration of new collaborations with donor partners.  The division regularly works with staff across EMBARQ and WRI to carry out its responsibilities.

EMBARQ Global is recruiting a development director to lead fundraising for the EMBARQ Global Network. His or her efforts will impact an organizational goal to raise at least $20 million a year by 2016 for EMBARQ’s diverse programs.  The Development Director, EMBARQ Global, will focus on cultivating new donors as well as managing current EMBARQ relationships.  The goal is to maximize and leverage the sustainable transport philanthropy potential of EMBARQ’s portfolio in order to advance the organization’s most critical projects. 

 

EMBARQ’s portfolio of work is determined by the EMBARQ global executive director in consultation with the programmatic/Center managing directors.  The Director will secure gifts in support of high profile, broad-based strategic initiatives of EMBARQ. 

 

The Development Director will be responsible for leading the institution’s strategic plan for growing sustainable transport fundraising; institutionalizing the responsibility for EMBARQ fundraising within the Networks’ Centers and Programs; and managing global fundraising operations.  The successful candidate will share a vision and commitment to EMBARQ and WRI’s mission and culture, characterized by intellectual enquiry, rigorous analytics and transparency toward the public and its donors.

 

We are seeking an accomplished, sophisticated, and externally-focused fundraiser with minimum ten years of technical and international fundraising experience.  The Development Director will be an individual who can build successful working relationships with the senior officers in the transportation, foundation, corporate, and government world, and partner with accomplished program officers at EMBARQ and WRI.  The Development Director will report to EMBARQ’s Executive Director and COO. 

 

This position offers the opportunity to connect with sustainable mobility and urbanization advocates, experts, and key foundation, corporate, and government players from around the world.

Responsibilities:
  • Lead identification, strategy and solicitation activities for the top 20-25 relationships for EMBARQ Global that bring significant resources (six and seven figure commitments) to the program’s priorities.
  • Proactively manage a portfolio of 20-50 high value EMBARQ prospects by developing and executing strategic prospect strategies across the unit leading to solicitation of significant gifts of $1 million and above. 
  • Establish and maintain strong and effective relationships with EMBARQ program staff and WRI colleagues to conceive collaborative, comprehensive prospect strategies. 
  • Provide expertise and strategic counsel regarding potential development opportunities on evolving programs, as needed. 
  • Guide the development of written proposals, white papers, strategic plans, budgets and the other related materials needed to deepen prospect engagement for securing a gift.
  • Work in a fast-paced, results-oriented, change environment with complex and evolving relationships and priorities. 
  • Develop and lead the growth of the EMBARQ global development team.
  • Facilitate regular communication and skills enhancement among fundraisers across the Network.
  • Provide fundraising updates through a monthly fundraising report to the Network (internal) as well as collection of Center/Program based fundraising activities and updates.
  • Coordinate quarterly development newsletter for donors.
  • Participate in weekly EMBARQ management Steering Committee meetings.
  • Participate fully in EMBARQ/WRI’s new CRM system (Raiser’s Edge & Sales Force). 
Qualifications:
  • A Bachelor’s degree and at least ten years of external fundraising experience, preferably in a large, international organizational setting.
  • Proven track record of developing and advancing significant private investments and philanthropy in environmentally-focused organizations through sophisticated relationship building using consistent and strategic moves management. 
  • Documented success personally implementing complex, multi-year cultivation strategies that use a relationship-building and moves management approach leading to successful closure of significant gifts. 
  • Prior experience working with individual, corporate, and foundation funders; bi/multi lateral agencies; government grants; boards from corporations and foundations; and other executive or high-level, high-capacity volunteers. 
  • Strong managerial skills and prior experience leading a dynamic team.
  • Strong collegial interpersonal skills with an ability to diplomatically and effectively communicate in person, writing, and by phone. 
  • Able to work independently and also within a complexly structured and evolving team. 
  • Collaborative problem solver who can take initiative and set priorities.
  • Team-oriented thinker and strategist able to effectively respond to complex situations involving numerous and sometimes competing organizational constituencies. 
  • A strong advocate for the vision of EMBARQ.
  • Ability to prepare complex and detailed proposals and related materials.
  • Attention to detail and thoroughness in completing assigned duties.

  • Adept at navigating complex institutional environments with evolving priorities and communication plans. 
  • Clarity of focus while juggling complex projects or deadlines while remaining flexible in the face of organizational change and ambiguity.

  • Enjoys working with a diverse group of talented individuals across the globe.
  • Demonstrated interest in and/or knowledge of transportation, environment, health, and urban planning.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and Excel and CRM systems.
