Description

The South African National Biodiversity Institute is offering a one year (12 months) internship to help inform the work of the Ecosystem Based Adaptation programme, and which will also contribute to the “Benefits of Biodiversity to Society” component of the National Biodiversity Assessment (NBA) for South Africa (see http://www.sanbi.org/nba for more information about the NBA).

We would aim to complete a systematic review or, if the data permit, a meta-analysis, on the relationship between biodiversity and ecological resilience, based on global and regional studies. The intern would also be required to produce a gap analysis of
research that is needed for South Africa in this field.

Who is eligible to apply?

We invite applications from M.Sc. graduates and preference will be given to historically disadvantaged individuals. Potential interns should have a background and skills that will allow them to contribute in the following research areas:

  • Writing of reports and communication with a network of scientists (excellent written and spoken communication in English is required)
  • Data sourcing, including knowledge on how to assemble data in a useable format
  • Data analysis

Applicants should have strong statistical and writing skills. Enthusiastic students with an MSc degree are urged to apply. No prior working experience is required but a strong academic record at university and a keen interest in the conservation of biodiversity
will be an advantage. Knowledge of / previous experience with systematic reviews, meta-analysis or advanced statistical analyses would also be useful.

Value

The stipend offered is fixed at R8 250 per month (Masters completed). No other benefits apply as this is an internship position.

Duration

January 2017 – December 2017
