Full time permanent position based at Stroud Head Office though there will be a heavy emphasis on survey work at our renewable energy schemes across the UK. 

This role will therefore entail substantial periods between March and October away from the office, involving overnight stay.

 

 

Overall Description of Duties:

To work as part of ecology team to deliver the Development Team objectives.  This will include the preparation of EIA statements and planning applications, in addition to undertaking surveys where appropriate, and the collection and analysis of ecological data.

  

Development Team Context:

The Development Team is responsible for securing land and the necessary permissions to enable the construction of renewable energy sites. This involves four main stages:

 

  1. The identification of developable sites for renewable energy and securing their availability with a land lease
  2. Preparing planning applications for renewable energy developments, including pre-application consultation and negotiations.
  3. Managing submitted planning applications, including appeals.
  4. Discharging and compliance with planning conditions.

 

 Principal Accountabilities:

  • To work with the Senior Ecologist to deliver the Development team objectives.  
  • Undertake Phase I habitat surveys and Phase 2 surveys where appropriate.
  • Undertake baseline protected species surveys 
  • To liaise with external ecological consultants as necessary.  
  • To undertake baseline studies of bats or birds with in house ecologist or external consultants.
  • Deployment and analysis of remote bat detectors (e.g. SM2s Anabats or equivalent).
  • To deliver Ecology chapters for individual Environmental Statements/Planning Statements, and non-technical summaries, overseen by the Senior Ecologist.
  • Providing Ecology input into new site selection, and the design and layout of our renewable energy projects.

 

 

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Act as an ambassador for the Company and build positive awareness of the company’s activities in all dealings within the industry and with the public, business sectors, non-government organisations, all levels of Government and all customers and contacts.
  • Provide an efficient service to External Customers (e.g. Landowners) and Company staff.
  • Suggest ideas for the development and growth of the Development Team and the Company.
  • Research and develop personal expertise in wind and renewable energy planning issues in the UK and European context.
  • Keep up to date with current legislation, policy development and other issues relevant to the position within the company and renewable energy industry.
  • Complete timesheets daily and finalise on last working day of each month.

 

Key Skills and knowledge required:

  • Good basic ecological field work/naturalist skills
  • Experience in undertaking an extended Phase I habitat survey;
  • Experience of conducting protected species surveys, particularly bat surveys
  • Good report writing and research skills.
  • Experience of writing ecology chapters for EIA’s
  • Experience of statistical analysis
  • Ability to work without supervision and to use their own initiative
  • A flexible approach to work and the ability to prioritise their workload  
  • Good IT skills - Excel, Word. 
  • Full Driving Licence
  • Physically fit
  • Experience of using GIS would be beneficial.
  • An understanding of farming and countryside management  in UK
  • Understanding of UK and European  Wildlife Legislation
  • An understanding of the UK planning system
  • An understanding and experience of the wind energy sector

 

Educational Requirements

  • Education to degree level or equivalent in appropriate subject
