Description
IMPORTANT:  This Advertiser has requested that applicants MUST be National Residents / Valid Work Permit-holders.  Other applicants need not apply.

We are an ecolodge situated in the Madidi National Park of northern Bolivia and are in need of volunteers with an environmental, ecological or biological degree to maintain a newly implemented record-keeping system. Although our jungle cabins were built in 2010 primarily as a bird-watching hotspot due to Madid's impressive avian biodiversity, it has recently been brought to our attention that a more scientific approach is required with regards to data and sightings. Additionally, the reserve is a great place for mammals, particularly nocturnal species such as night monkeys, jaguar, puma and many more.

It is worth noting that due to the location of the cabins, there is no wifi and telephone signal can only be obtained through one network provider and by climbing to known spots in the mountains. Arrangements can be made for irregular journeys to Rurrenabaque for provisions or breaks. However we suggest that this happens at two week intervals minimum owing to logistical issues.

Responsibilities, tasks and provided training for the position include:

  • Professional bird identification training with one of our Spanish/English-speaking indigenous guides.
  • Self-instructed avian biodiversity study including potential for nesting and behavioural research.
  • Camera trap and GPS mapping work (subject to equipment grants that are currently being explored).
  • Additional marketing and tourism outreach work (if interested).
We provide:
  • Free accommodation in the low season, although in peak season paying guests will take priority as proceeds are fed back into the local community who own the lands (please enquire about availability within the application).
  • Transportation from and to Rurrenabaque (passenger boat and 4x4 taxi) but making your own way to this point is your own responsibility. We can definitely offer advice and suggestions however.
  •  Our onsite kitchen staff will cook traditional food for you three times a day, however you must purchase your own food, which is relatively cheap in the local markets.
  • If studies are successful there is a possibility for publication in scientific journals due to minimal local research.
Requirements:
  • Suitable and applicable degree in science (or ecotourism).
  • Hard-working outdoor enthusiast with resolve and acceptance of unpredictable weather conditions.
  • A modern laptop preferably with long battery life (we only have the generator running for a negotiable amount of time in evenings).
  • Any further required equipment you feel necessary to complete research (as mentioned there is the potential for GPS consoles and camera traps in the future).
Applicants should send a cover email and an up-to-date resume to the listed address. Any further questions will be answered by contacting us so feel free to enquire.
