27/06/14 - 30/06/14
This three-day course aims to visit a wide range of upland habitats where a variety of montane and Arctic-alpine species can be found. In particular we will be contrasting more acidic hillsides with lime-rich areas. Throughout the course there will be an emphasis on plant identification and the use of keys. For mountain flowers, the Collins Flower Guide is probably the most complete guide available which has colour illustrations. For field use, Stace's Field Flora of the British Isles is a good book to use but there are no colour illustrations and only a few black and white ones. During the course there will be a chance to look at other identification guides and relevant literature.
For this course a moderate level of fitness is essential and participants will be expected to cover up to six km a day with ascents of up to 1,500 feet.
