The Director of Development, West Coast will effectively identify and manage a major gift portfolio and establish a major prospect solicitation pipeline with an emphasis in the greater Los Angeles region.  Charged with building a greater presence in Los Angeles and the West Coast as a whole, the Director of Development will initiate and strengthen relationships with major and principal gift prospects and successfully close gifts of five to seven figures.  Although there is a current portfolio of committed donors in the Los Angeles region, this position has not recently been based in Southern California, allowing the Director of Development an opportunity to expand IFAW’s community of supporters.  The primary responsibility will be to create and implement a strategy to expand IFAW’s donor base, including individuals and institutions, with a particular focus on identifying and cultivating the next generation of major donors.  In addition to establishing and maintaining a personal portfolio of current and prospective donors, the Director of Development will be responsible for building a community of volunteer support on the West Coast, including recruiting and engaging members of the National and Regional Advisory Councils.  Initially the focus is in the greater Los Angeles region with the goal of expanding major giving in other parts of the West Coast, particularly northern California.

Reporting to the Director of Development, Major Gifts (located at the world headquarters in Yarmouth Port, MA), the Director of Development will be a key member of the major gifts team focusing on donors on the West Coast.  He/She will effectively represent the organization’s development interests to constituencies, both internal and external, and will work in concert with the development team to achieve philanthropic goals and build a case for support on the West Coast.  Working from a home office or a collaborative co-working space, the Director of Development will oversee a shared Development Coordinator who will assist in special projects and event planning.

Responsibilities:

·         Defining, developing and prioritizing IFAW’s West Coast short-term and long-term development goals while ensuring that efforts are carried out in keeping with the organization’s values, mission, vision, and plans.

·         Expanding and growing a diversified mix of donor sources and solicitation programs tailored to the needs of IFAW that will enable it to attract, retain and motivate donors and volunteers.

·         Identifying, cultivating and soliciting a personal portfolio of current and new funding sources and opportunities for IFAW including individual, foundation and corporate donors and prospects, with an emphasis on five to seven figure gifts.

·         Supporting the Director of Development, Major Gifts and Vice President of Development in the identification, cultivation and recruitment of prospective Board and Advisory Council members.

·         Managing the work of a Development Coordinator (and working in conjunction with centralized support staff) to plan and implement small scale events for donor cultivation and fundraising efforts.

·         Maintaining a working knowledge of best practices and significant developments and trends in philanthropy relevant to IFAW and to the West Coast region, and adapting fundraising strategies as necessary.

·         Planning and implementing small scale events for donor cultivation and fundraising efforts in conjunction with event planning staff.

Requirements:

The successful candidate will be an innovative, forward-thinking development professional with exceptional interpersonal skills and a genuine enthusiasm for IFAW and its mission.  The individual must have an entrepreneurial spirit, take initiative and actively seek to deepen existing internal and external relationships and forge new ones.  Due to the remote nature of this position, the Director of Development will show a willingness to actively seek out and create relationships with colleagues at the headquarters through 2-3 trips annually to the East coast as well as frequent communication via telephone, email and videoconference.  He/She will be a builder with the demonstrated ability to thrive in a self-starter environment.  The Director of Development should be an independent thinker but also a team player who works collaboratively to achieve ambitious goals.  The ability to handle complex situations, combined with the strategic vision and an intuitive sense of the whole enterprise are important.  As such, the Director of Development should not only possess strong communication skills, but should also be able to create an environment that is conducive to open and direct communication with individuals of varying degrees of involvement with IFAW and its work.   The successful candidate should be a resourceful, results-oriented leader with the ability to think strategically, generate new ideas, prioritize, plan, and set goals and objectives, as well as implement and follow-through.

The ability to work out of a home office or a collaborative co-working space is required.  The position will also require 25% of this person’s time spent on travel for donor visits, events, professional development, and organizational meetings in the United States and abroad.  The Director of Development, will be expected to travel to the headquarters a minimum of two times a year for organizational meetings.  During the Director of Development’s first year an international trip to visit a program will be required with the possibility of international travel every other year after that.

CAREER PATH LEADING TO THIS POSITION:

The ideal candidate will have a minimum of 7 years of development experience, including a minimum of five years’ experience fundraising in Southern California.  Robust knowledge and understanding of the Los Angeles philanthropic community and entertainment sector is desired. He/She will have a proven record of success with soliciting and securing major gifts from individuals, corporations and foundations.  The successful candidate must have a broad-based knowledge of all functions of development, including the use of databases, major and planned giving techniques, and knowledge of volunteer engagement and management.  Experience in animal welfare is not required, but a passion for the work of IFAW is important.

EDUCATION:

An undergraduate degree is required.
