Position Summary:

The Development Manager for Europe will be responsible for developing and implementing strategies for the generation of funding resources for the Rainforest Alliance’s work from institutional donors based in Europe. The primary focus on institutional donors will include bilateral and multilateral government funders, private foundations and corporations in the United Kingdom, Germany, Norway, Belgium, France, the Netherlands, and Switzerland, among other priority countries. S/he will be responsible for building relationships and networking with donor agencies to stay abreast of funding opportunities, as well as maintaining regular engagement with Rainforest Alliance field staff to gather high-quality programmatic information. This position will manage a portfolio of European donors while maintaining close coordination with Institutional Giving colleagues in the United States.  Additionally, s/he will work in close collaboration with the US-based Individual Giving team, to help devise and manage an individual giving program in Europe. This will include managing a small personal portfolio of individual donors and prospects with an annual giving capacity of USD 5,000 to USD 100,000 and helping to adapt our direct-response fundraising efforts for European markets. The Manager will be expected to represent the organization in meetings and negotiations with donors, and provide support to Board members, senior management, and international program staff in their interactions with donors worldwide.  

 Responsibilities:

  • Along with the Vice President of Development, the Director of Institutional Giving and the Director of Individual Giving, develop and implement overall strategy to win institutional and individual funding from Europe to achieve the organization’s Vision 2020 goal;
  • Lead regular engagement with contacts at key donor agencies through in-person meetings and phone calls to stay apprised of funding programs and opportunities in the international development, poverty alleviation and environmental conservation arena;

  • Write, adapt and edit proposals and concept papers for annual support as well as restricted funding for international field projects and programs;

  • Manage the editing and quality control process of proposals, concept papers, and reports in portfolio;

  • Provide support and guidance to colleagues on areas of work including: research on prospective funding opportunities and donor strategy, donor database management, meeting preparation and follow-up, and donor cultivation and stewardship;

  • In collaboration with the Director of Individual Giving, develop, review and implement strategy for increased individual donor awareness in Europe, with an initial focus on Germany and the United Kingdom; establish priority donor targets, strategies and outreach activities; identify, engage, cultivate, solicit and steward prospects and donors in individual portfolio.

  • Advise on strategy and coordinate with Membership team to adopt direct response fundraising campaigns for European markets, as appropriate.

  • In conjunction with Special Events, design and execute appropriate cultivation and fundraising events;

  • Build awareness by representing Rainforest Alliance at relevant conferences and events;

  • Prepare President, Executive Vice President, senior staff, and board members for meetings with relevant donors, as appropriate;

  • Maintain accurate donor information through database (Salesforce); and

  • Other tasks as assigned.

 Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s Degree required; Master’s Degree a plus;

  • 7-10 years’ experience with at least 3 years of previous resource development, program development or fundraising experience;

  • Track record of closing solicitations with individual donors at the $10,000-50,000 level preferred;

  • Knowledge of environmental and community development issues, and institutional funding mechanisms required;

  • Demonstrated understanding of and commitment to sustainability;

  • Excellent writing and editing skills in English, with significant proposal writing experience required;

  • Excellent interpersonal and relationship building skills;

  • Fluent in business English with additional written and oral Spanish, French and/or German language proficiency preferred.

  • High degree of organizational skill, including the ability to manage multiple priorities and work under tight deadlines;

  • Demonstrated ability to work independently, as well as be an effective team member;

  • Experience working with budgets and financial reports;

  • Experience with MS Office Suite (Word, Excel and PowerPoint) and with fundraising database systems – Salesforce preferred; and

  • Willingness and ability to travel internationally up to 20% of time.
