A vacancy has arisen within the DEEPSEAS benthic ecology group at the National Oceanography Centre, Southampton.for a deep-sea biologist to carry out research on samples from the Porcupine Abyssal Plain, NE Atlantic.  The successful applicant will analyse the abundance and community structure of benthic protozoans in core samples from the Porcupine Abyssal Plain, which will contribute to the Oceans 2025 Theme 5.8 (Benthic system dynamics) Research Project.  You will be required to formally describe novel species of benthic protozoans, analyse faunal data and publish papers in peer-reviewed journals, reports and other outputs.   You will have a PhD in a relevant discipline, together with experience in the taxonomy of deep-sea protozoans, particularly soft-shelled foraminifera and gromiids.  A proven ability to formally describe new species is essential, as is experience in deep-sea sampling.  You should be highly motivated, able to use your own initiative, possess excellent oral and written communication skills and be able to work both independently and as part of a small team.   This post will initially be offered as a 12 month fixed–term position and is available from 2 November 2009.  The salary will be in the range of £27,183 to £33,432 per annum depending on experience. General enquiries should be directed to Professor Andrew Gooday, Ocean Biogeochemistry and Ecosystems Group, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton (+44 (0) 2380 596362 or e-mail (ang@noc.soton.ac.uk).
