Data Utilisation and Advice Officer

Various Locations Scotland 

£30,381 - £34,997 plus benefits

This is a Fixed Term Appointment for 24 months with the possibility of extension or permanency but no guarantee.

Background Information

Forestry Commission Scotland (FCS) operates as a division of the Scottish Government’s Environment and Forestry Directorate and is responsible for the creation and delivery of forestry policies. 

FCS is responsible to Ministers through Bob McIntosh who is the Director of the Scottish Government’s Environment & Forestry Directorate.

The Policy Group provides social, economic and environmental support to FCS, Ministers and the wider Scottish Government.  The Environment Policy team advises on environmental and cultural heritage aspects of forestry policy, strategy and initiatives and leads development projects that inform the advice given.

The Native Woodland Survey Scotland (NWSS) is a major project led by FCS.  It is designed to meet the objectives identified within the Scottish Forestry Strategy and subsequently to inform strategic direction relating to native woodlands in Scotland.

The post is based in Silvan House, Edinburgh and the postholder will report to Derek Nelson, Native Woodland Survey Project Manager.

Purpose of the Job

To maximise the value and uses of Native Woodland Survey of Scotland data by ensuring accuracy and accessibility of data, providing advice and guidance, carrying out and enabling promotion and joint development activities as well as reporting on outcomes achieved.

As Data Utilisation and Advice Officer you must have; 

  • Proven ability to produce clear and concise written material for a range of internal and external audiences. 
  • A detailed knowledge and understanding of GIS, in particular the ESRI suite of products e.g. Arc 10, and the ability to interrogate relational databases and perform analyses in order to inform decisions.
