Position Description: We are looking for a conservation manager with a passion for conservation, field research and community outreach to work alongside our field outreach team. Working with local and rural communities is a key part of Tacugama's work to protect chimpanzees and conserve their habitat to ensure the long-term survival of wild chimpanzees in Sierra Leone. The Tacugama community outreach programme is currently being implemented in almost 20 rural communities and we are looking to expand its reach and effectiveness. More information is available on our website project page: www.tacugama.com/communityoutreach.html The conservation manager will help to develop and deliver participatory projects that will address root cause issues threatening chimpanzees and their survival. These projects will include environmental and conservation education, agricultural skills training and sustainable livelihood development. The conservation manager will also help coordinate and carrying out field research work. Liaison and coordination with other organisations and stakeholders will be an important part of the role. Identification of grants and submission of proposals to fund granting institutions will also be a big part of the role. The conservation manager will also build the skills of the existing field outreach team in areas such as field research skills, project planning, report writing and communication.
Qualifications/Experience: - Proven community development experience gained in developing countries - Proven field research skills - Proven experience in proposal development and grant writing - Excellent planning and communication skills - An understanding of key issues impacting primate conservation - Ability to create and carry out new initiatives independently - Good working knowledge of agriculture / agro-forestry - Enjoy working with and training people - Previous experience living in an isolated setting with limited amenities - Enthusiasm and tenacity
Salary/funding: US$1000 per month.
Support provided for internship/volunteer positions (travel, meals, lodging): Accommodation is provided at the sanctuary together with one local meal daily
Term of Appointment: You should ideally be available for a period of twelve months starting as soon as possible
