OCEANA, an international organization focused solely on protecting the world’s oceans, is dedicated to achieving measurable change by conducting scientific, fact-based campaigns and articulated goals.  Our campaigns are led by teams of scientists, economists, lawyers and advocates to restore and protect oceans.

We are looking for a forward thinking, environmentally minded communications manager to provide day-to-day support for our North American campaigns.  As Communications Manager, you will help Oceana’s North America Office advance its campaign goals by increasing visibility and public awareness of ocean issues.  Your principal responsibility will be to assist Oceana’s campaign directors bring attention to relevant issues through media coverage and establish key relationships with the media on behalf of our campaigns.   You will also assist campaign directors in all forms of communication and outreach to targeted audiences, helping to maintain Oceana’s position as a go-to organization on ocean issues.   You must thrive in fast-paced environments that require quick decision-making under pressure and strong multi-tasking skills.

Responsibilities include:

  • Develop communications strategies for new projects and managing efforts through research, planning, implementation and evaluation
  • Cultivate and manage successful relationships with key journalists, vendors and interest groups, including building and managing media lists for the campaigns
  • Secure placements in top local, regional, national and international media outlets, including tracking press coverage and meeting specific goals
  • Orchestrate, manage and execute successful media tours in the U.S. and abroad
  • Conceptualize, develop and manage production of high-level strategic campaign materials ranging from communications plans and press releases to reports and advertising campaigns

The successful candidate will have: 

  • Two to four years of media relations experience and expertise in pitching and writing for the media
  • Superior communications skills
  • Excellent writing and editing skills
  • Strong multi-tasking skills with a focus on superior attention to detail
  • Ability to work well with a variety of personalities
  • Ability to meet strict deadlines and work under pressure while maintaining collaborative work behavior
  • In-depth knowledge of social media tools, network and online communities
  • Familiarity with ocean issues desirable, commitment to conservation principles essential.
  • Bachelor’s degree
