The U.S. Climate Action Network (USCAN) is seeking an individual with excellent communications skills to coordinate and facilitate communications efforts between and among its member organizations on state, federal and international policy priorities to address global warming.  The Communications Director is responsible for strengthening communications across the network and key allies who are working together to build political support for solutions to address the urgent threat presented by global warming.  The Communications Director reports directly to the Executive Director and as a key leader in USCAN works closely with the Outreach Director and the Policy Director.
 
The Communications Director serves as a central point of contact for network members at the state and local level for staying abreast of communications efforts surrounding federal policy developments and for ensuring information on emerging developments is being shared in real time across the network. This position will play a critical role in facilitating collaborative efforts among network members through meetings, regular policy and advocacy updates, and management of the online advocacy center for USCAN members and e-mail list serves.

This is a full-time, regular position with potential for professional growth and opportunities for travel, both domestic and international.
 
Key Responsibilities:
  • Develop messaging guidance, strategy and materials for use by network members;
  • Identify opportunities and facilitate coordination and collaboration on joint communications efforts among network members;
  • Lead development of new USCAN website, working with web developers and network members to identify web-based tools and resources needed by the network;
  • Manage website & online communications center to facilitate collaboration among USCAN members;
  • Work with Climate Action Network International to help facilitate international joint communications efforts around key UN conferences;
  • Generate regular updates to members and allies on key activities, events, and developments related to climate change at the state, federal, and international levels; and
  • Maintenance of CAN email list serves, other communications activities and administrative tasks.

Qualifications:
Minimum three years experience in communications or related non-profit advocacy, with a preference for experience in energy or climate change.  Strong communications skills and attention to detail are a must for this position.  Specifically, this position requires excellent oral and written communications skills, including editorial management of joint publications and web-based information on behalf of the network, and ideal candidate will also have website management/editing experience.   Good interpersonal skills and ability to work with teams of individuals on remote basis and assert leadership when appropriate will be critical to success in this position 
 
Location: The position is based in USCAN’s Washington, DC office. 

Salary Range:
Competitive salary, depending on background and experience, with benefits.
