Through the GLOBE (Growing Leaders on Behalf of the Environment) internship program, The Nature Conservancy hires students and recent college graduates to fill paid internship positions during a 10-week summer internship. This is a unique opportunity for students and recent graduates to bridge the gap between what is learned in the classroom and on-the-ground work in the world of conservation. Additionally, the GLOBE program provides interns with the chance to directly work toward a sustainable future for our planet on the side of the Conservancy, the world’s largest environmental organization.

The Nature Conservancy offers GLOBE internships in the following areas: Conservation/Environmental Studies, Science, Information Technology (Computer Science), Marketing/Business, Marketing (Photo editing/Production Assistant), Communications, MBA Finance, Policy, Government Relations, Audit, and Philanthropy.
TNC

• Assist in the collection of field data for marine conservation projects designed to create subtidal and intertidal oyster reef habitat in Mississippi bays.  Types of collected data include metrics associated with fish and invertebrate sampling, water quality, and oyster monitoring.  Data collection will be conducted from land and from boat.
• Manage collected data and assist in the writing and presentation of annual report.
• Assist in the collection GIS and spatial Data.
• Assist in the photo documentation of projects.
• Participate in outreach associated with Marine Program, typically 2-3 events on Saturdays.
• Although primary duties will include work with the Mississippi Chapter of TNC, there will be opportunity to work and assist the Alabama Chapter of TNC with similar coastal projects.
• If GIS experienced, will assist in the redesign of the Mississippi Marine Program GIS database.
• Adhere to Mississippi TNC Safety Guidelines.

• Some college experience in natural resources, environmental studies or equivalent combination of education and 6 months of experience
• Experience operating various types of equipment
• Experience working outside and performing physical work
• Experience working with Microsoft Office Suite software
• Strong oral and written communication skills

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

• Experience collecting and identifying fish and invertebrate species.
• Experience collecting and managing GIS data and spatial data.
• Experience working in coastal environments, (i.e. oyster reefs, estuarine habitats, Gulf of Mexico Habitats) or experience working in fresh water or terrestrial habitats.

• This is a full-time, temporary internship position with a position term of June 1, 2014 - August 8, 2014.
• Housing stipend will be provided

AUTO SAFETY POLICY

This position requires a valid driver's license and compliance with the Conservancy's Auto Safety Program.  Employees may not drive Conservancy-owned/leased vehicles, rental cars, or personal vehicles on behalf of the Conservancy if considered "high risk drivers."  Please see further details in the Auto Safety Program document available at www.nature.org/careers. 

Employment in this position will be contingent upon completion of a Vehicle Use Agreement, which may include a review of the prospective employee's motor vehicle record.

WORKING CONDITIONS/PHYSICAL EFFORT

• Fieldwork will likely be conducted 2-4 days a week and at times be arduous.
• Will work with other TNC staff at field locations accessible by land and water.
• Will work with TNC staff, often on a small 22 foot work boat.
• Position is anticipated to include approximately 60% of time in field and 40% time in the office.
• Weather in South Mississippi can at time be very hot and humid during the late spring through early fall, successful candidates must be prepared for to tolerate high heat (85-100 degrees), exposure to the sun for several hours, high humidity, and biting insects.

TNC

• $12.00/hour for undergraduate students; $14.00/hour for graduate students and above

3. Applicant must be enrolled in an undergraduate or graduate program. Recent graduates applying for internship positions should be graduates of the past 2 years.

Intern Selection Process

• 2-3 phone interviews will be conducted for applicants selected to interview
• Additional information may be required before making a final decision
• All applicants will be notified of final selection by mid-March.
