Organization Statement
The Fundamental & Computational Sciences Directorate at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL) features world-leading research programs and capabilities in the biological, chemical, environmental, and computational and materials sciences.  Directorate researchers lead major R&D efforts in environmental microbiology and biogeochemistry, proteomics, experimental and theoretical interfacial chemistry, chemical analysis, climate physics and global/regional scale modeling, and integrated assessment for energy and environment. We are building new programs in systems biology and biotechnology, interfacial catalysis, multifunctional materials, aerosol science, and extreme-scale simulations.
Job Description
This position (Scientist / Engineer, Level II) reports to the Director of the Atmospheric Science & Global Change Division within the Fundamental & Computational Sciences Directorate.  Our mission is to understand the fundamental science of earth system processes and human systems at decade-to-century scales. Integrated teams deliver insights on the dynamic interactions between climate systems and impacts, with a focus on delivering decision-relevant insights and understanding.   Our technical groups address the following scientific focus areas: atmospheric processes that drive regional and global earth systems, with a primary focus on climate, aerosol and cloud physics; global and regional scale modeling; integrated assessment; and complex regional meteorology and chemistry.  We conduct our work through an integrated approach that includes theory, experiments/observations and modeling, and implications for decision-makers.

We are seeking an individual with strong analytic skills in energy and environmental systems to provide technical leadership and insight for understanding the interactions between climate and energy systems and the implications for policy decisions on climate change.  This position will have a major responsibility for understanding and evaluating the emerging science in climate change, including reviews and synthesis of the products of the US Global Change Research Program (formerly the Climate Change Science Program) and of the National Academy of Science.  This position will also be responsible for conducting a variety of science, technology and market assessments, and will participate in the development and implementation of a new research program in climate change and integrated assessment.  This individual will also participate in interactions designed to better integrate our physical and social science/policy capabilities, which will require some travel to the Joint Global Change Research Institute located in College Park, MD.  This position will provide an opportunity to participate in developing products for strategic business planning and strategic partnerships for the Division, and participate in related laboratory activities in developing and implementing new research initiatives or programs.

The successful candidate will have experience in evaluating/analyzing energy and/or environmental systems or technologies, and have knowledge of current challenges and issues in climate and energy policy and related research or engineering programs. Demonstrated experience working with interdisciplinary teams to achieve results is required, as are excellent written and oral communication skills.  A proven track record of accomplishment is desired, although early career candidates are also welcome.  Experience that demonstrates innovation, good judgment, and a focus on achieving results is highly valued, as is the ability to work independently and proactively.  The successful candidate will have a broad interest in science and technology, and specific experience with a variety of energy technology or environmental systems.  Masters candidates preferred.

Minimum Requirements
Minimum Education/Experience: Bachelors Degree in Energy or Environmental Economics, Engineering (or related fields) plus 3-5 years of related experience

Candidate must have experience in climate and/or energy issues or technology planning and analysis.  Three or more years of experience involving increasing responsibility in working with multidisciplinary program teams desired.  The successful candidate must have a demonstrated track record of accomplishment in scientific/engineering analysis, excellent communication skills, and strong leadership qualities.
