Climate Change Policy Officer

  • Location: BirdLife International Secretariat, Cambridge.
  • Open ended. Full time (35 hours per week).
  • Salary in the range of £23,000 - £28,000 (plus generous pension contribution).

BirdLife works together as a partnership to conserve wild birds, their habitats and global diversity, by working with people towards sustainability in the use of natural resources.  BirdLife’s unique local-to-global approach enables us to deliver high impact and long term conservation for the benefit of nature and people.

We are seeking to recruit a Climate Change Policy Officer, with a focus on climate change adaptation policy, to BirdLife International’s global policy team in Cambridge. This position represents an exciting opportunity to work with a range of key national and international actors to advance ecosystem-based approaches to climate change adaptation. The post holder will work with the BirdLife Partnership to advocate for robust national adaptation policies within national and international fora, including the UNFCCC, that take account of the role of ecosystems in helping the vulnerable adapt to climate change.  A particular focus will be managing a project with colleagues in East Africa, helping to build capacity, providing technical supervision and guidance on a range of issues including vulnerability assessment at case study sites, national climate change and landuse policies and plans, and facilitating meetings and workshops.

The ideal candidate will have

  • Demonstrable understanding of international climate change policy
  • Extensive knowledge and of climate change adaptation policy issues, particularly ecosystem-based approaches to adaptation
  • At least two years project management experience related to climate change policy
  • Experience of, and commitment to, international biodiversity conservation.
  • Degree, or equivalent experience, in a subject related to conservation or sustainable development
  • Excellent people management skills and cultural sensitivity
  • Skilled in critically analysing and synthesising policies
  • Excellent written English and ability to communicate in writing and orally with a wide range of audiences.
